The wind turns

Kevin returns to the cottage as the first true gusts pick up from the west. The sky turns a bruised purple.

The air is thick and stagnant, the 28°C heat holding the island while the barometer continues its drop to 985 hPa, signaling an approaching front. The tide is rising steadily against the reinforced dock pilings.

🔧 Kevin02:41

Jenny — front's here. Shutters first, then dinghy.

Walk to the east shutter, grab the staged 10mm through-bolt and washers, drive it home into the salt-pine knee blank with the heavy wrench.

💭 peek at the thought
Front's moving faster than the barometer warned. Need to get the shutters dogged and the dinghy warp checked before the swell builds.

🌿 Jenny02:43

I'm coming... just give me a second.

Jenny pushes herself up from the floor, wincing as weight hits the swollen ankle, and crawls toward the porch to help with the shutters.

💭 peek at the thought
way's moving too fast; my head is spinning and the ankle feels like a hot iron.

🔧 Kevin02:43

Sit. I've got the east. You take the porch door — just the latch and the hook. Nothing that needs weight.

Finish torquing the 10mm through-bolt on the east shutter, check the nyloc's seated, then move to the west shutter to dog the bottom hinge and slide the storm bar.

💭 peek at the thought
She shouldn't be moving on that ankle. Not with the infection barely held. But she'll fight me if I say it, and the shutters need two.

🌿 Jenny02:45

Right. Latch and hook. I can manage that.

Jenny shifts carefully to her feet, favoring the injured ankle, and limps toward the cottage door, gripping the wall for support.

💭 peek at the thought
The porch door's latch is just a simple hook, nothing structural, but I need to focus on something steady.

🔧 Kevin02:45

Door first. Then come back inside. Don't fight the wind if it catches it.

Finish the west shutter storm bar, grab the spare tarp and batten strips from the porch, then follow her to the cottage door to help secure it.

💭 peek at the thought
She's stubborn. Always has been. But the way she's breathing — shallow, careful — tells me the fever's climbing. Can't leave her alone at the door if a gust takes it.

🌿 Jenny02:47

I'm here. What's the plan? I'm right behind you. Let's get this door secured.

Jenny pulls a clean cloth from her pocket and wraps it around her ankle, then steps carefully toward the cottage door, using the wall for support.

💭 peek at the thought
Don't fight the wind — let it catch what I can secure. The porch door latch is just a simple hook, but I need to get this done before the storm hits harder.

🔧 Kevin02:47

Door shut and hooked. Shutters done. Dinghy warp doubled on the north piling. Generator off and covered. Radio aerial down if the mast shakes. Water tank overflow clear. Then we wait.

Step to the cottage door, lift the heavy oak plank into the frame, slide the iron hook home, test it with a shoulder lean. Hand her the spare tarp roll.

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking me for the plan. Means she's trusting me to lead. Means she's worse than she's letting on.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:55

Got it. What's left?

Jenny takes the spare tarp roll from Kevin's offered hands, her fingers already reaching for the batten strips in her pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
The water tank overflow needs checking — I should have done that earlier. But right now I need to focus on what's in front of me.

🔧 Kevin02:55

Dinghy. Generator. Radio aerial. Then inside.

Walk down the porch steps to the dock, check the doubled stern spring on the north piling, add a half-hitch for insurance, then move to the generator shed to kill the engine and batten the cover.

💭 peek at the thought
She's running on pure will. The moment this front passes, she's going to crash. Need the medical kit ready and the broth hot.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:04

I'll do the latch.

Jenny limps to the porch door, her ankle throbbing as she reaches for the iron hook to slide it into place.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up, I can feel the pressure dropping. I need to get this door secured before the rain starts sideways.
