The Rising Pressure

Kevin sits on the porch steps watching the barometer as it drops to 988 hPa. Jenny rests in a chair with her ankle propped up, watching the heavy, overcast clouds darken over the garden.

Kevin keyed the radio for the supply boat check-in but received only a Taiwan typhoon broadcast amid heavy static; no reply from the vessel. He inspected the dock pilings and found the south piling now carrying the full load while the north piling stump shows a rising waterline. Jenny's ankle infection continues tracking upward, skin tight and hot.

🌿 Jenny10:58

Kevin, move the seed tin to the top shelf. Now.

Reaches down to touch the hot, tight skin of her calf, wincing at the movement of the blanket.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if it hits 985, the surge is going to reach the porch floor.

🔧 Kevin10:58

Already moving.

walk to the workbench, pick up the rusted seed tin marked E, carry it to the top shelf inside the cottage, set it down carefully, return to the porch steps

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the same pressure drop I am. The tin's on the workbench — heavy, rusted, marked E. If the surge comes through the porch door it'll be gone. My hands are still shaking but this I can do.

🌿 Jenny10:59

Check the dinghy seacocks again. I don't want to wake up to a floating boat.

Closes eyes, trying to ignore the throbbing in her leg.

💭 peek at the thought
It's safe for now, but the tide is coming in and I can feel the air shifting.

🔧 Kevin11:00

On it.

walk down the porch steps, cross the wet grass to the dock, step into the dinghy, crouch at the transom and check the Yanmar raw water seacock handle — confirm closed, then check the bilge pump intake seacock forward — confirm closed, grip

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The Yanmar's raw water seacock and the bilge intake — if either's fouled or left open with this swell, the dinghy fills overnight. I checked them yesterday but the tide's turning different now. Barometer's still falling.

🌿 Jenny11:01

Watch the eye bolts on the dock. If they go again, we lose the whole thing.

Pulls the blanket tighter over her leg, the heat radiating through the wool.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being careful, but the sea doesn't care about his nerves.

🔧 Kevin11:06

Checking now.

walk the length of the dock to the seaward piling, crouch and inspect the three eye bolts and washers on the starboard side, probe the mortise joints with fingers for movement, check the sister plank bolts for fresh bite marks, grip the doc

💭 peek at the thought
The eye bolts on the seaward piling took the brunt last night when the north piling failed. The sister plank's holding but the bolts are working in soft timber — I saw the washers bite deeper this morning. If they pull through, the dock goes sideways and takes the dinghy mooring with it. Need to check the mortise joints too.

🔧 Kevin11:08

Eye bolts holding. Mortises tight. Sister plank solid. But the list's increased — south piling's carrying the load now.

walk back along the dock toward the cottage, pause at the north piling stump to check the waterline mark from this morning, compare it to the current tide level, climb the porch steps, sit beside Jenny on the steps

💭 peek at the thought
The eye bolts are holding but the washers have chewed another millimetre into the greenheart since dawn. Mortise joints are tight — oak wedges still driven deep. Sister plank bolts show no new movement. But the dock's listing starboard is worse. The south piling's taking more weight now. If the swell builds past six metres like the skipper said, the leverage on those bolts changes.

🌿 Jenny11:13

Get the radio. I need to know if that boat is actually coming.

Shifts her weight off the ankle, a sharp intake of breath as the skin stretches.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is too high. If the barometer keeps falling, the salt water will be under the porch.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:13

Getting it.

walk into the kitchen, pull the shortwave radio from the shelf, carry it to the porch, set it on the step beside me, extend the whip aerial, power it on, wait for the tubes to warm, key the mic on the supply boat's working channel

💭 peek at the thought
She wants the supply boat ETA. The skipper said maybe Thursday — that's three days out if he holds to it. Barometer at 979 and falling says he won't. But she needs to hear it official. The radio's under the tarp on the kitchen shelf, aerial shattered but functional. My hands are steadier now.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:15

Come on, talk. This is Sorrel Island. Is anyone out there?

Leans toward the speaker, hand trembling slightly on the dial.

💭 peek at the thought
Static. Just the sound of the waves and the hiss in my ear.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:15

Sorrel Island calling supply vessel. Over.

key the mic, speak into it clearly, release and listen to the static hiss, watch the signal strength meter stay at zero

💭 peek at the thought
She's calling on the working channel. The skipper monitors it but only keys up at scheduled check-ins — 0800 and 1800 usually. It's past 0800 now. He might not answer. Static hisses from the speaker. My thumb hovers over the mic button. If I key it, I identify us. If I don't, we wait.
