Morning coffee and radio silence

Kevin and Jenny sit together on the porch steps with tin mugs of coffee. The shortwave radio rests between them, silent after the failed check-in. The tide is high against the dock, the south piling groaning under the load. Jenny's ankle is propped on a cushion, the calf wrapped in a fresh sea beet poultice. The barometer reads 979 hPa and falling. The supply boat is due today.

The air in the cottage is thick and humid, smelling of salt and the coming storm. Kevin sighs as the radio crackles with static, the pressure drop feeling like a physical weight on his chest. Jenny sits on the bench, her leg flushed and angry, the heat radiating from her skin as she watches Kevin's hand rest over hers, the heirloom seeds waiting between them.

The pressure is dropping fast, Kevin. Don't keep watching the horizon.

Trace the red line on my calf with a finger, noting the new inch of heat since yesterday.

💭 peek at the thought
If that boat doesn't show, the antibiotics are going to run out before the infection reaches my knee.

Not watching. Just... sitting.

Set the mug down on the porch boards, reach for the radio handset, key the mic for the 0800 check-in — "Sorrel Island, Sorrel Island, this is Kilo-Victor-Zero, standing by for supply vessel, over."

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Watching won't bring the boat. The needle's at 979 and still falling — southwest blow coming hard. Dock won't hold if the north piling's gone and the south one takes another hit. My hands are still trembling from the adrenaline crash. Coffee helps.

🌿 Jenny11:23

It's not coming. The air is too heavy.

Lean back against the whitewashed stone, closing my eyes against the pulsing throb in my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
Static is the only answer this island gives me now.

Thursday he said. Skipper won't cross the bar in this.

Unkey the mic, set the handset back in its cradle, wrap both hands around the warm tin mug again, let the heat soak into shaking fingers.

💭 peek at the thought
She knows. We both know. Barometer at 979 and falling, southwest swell building, supply boat skipper already said Thursday at earliest. The radio's just noise now. My hands still shake on the handset.

Then we hope the salt water lasts longer than the fever.

Reach for the tin of seeds in my lap, tracing the cold metal of the heirloom I haven't had courage to plant yet.

💭 peek at the thought
Thursday is a lifetime away when the skin is tight enough to split.

Tank's near full. Catchment'll top it off.

Cover her hand on the tin with mine, rough fingers over hers, feel the pulse in her wrist — steady, stronger than mine.

💭 peek at the thought
The tin's cold against my thigh. Heirloom seeds — tomato, pepper, sea beet — wrapped in dry newspaper with desiccant. Eleven months I've held them. Eleven months of talking about a sensory garden that's still half weeds. The infection's tracking up her calf another inch since yesterday. Antibiotics three days out if the poultice fails. Salt water's 394 litres in the tank. Rain's coming with this low.
