The Storm Sets In

The rain finally breaks, drumming a heavy rhythm against the thatch roof. You and Jenny sit together in the dim light, listening to the rising tide lap against the dock pilings.

Heavy rain lashes the cottage from the west as the barometer continues to drop despite the heat. Kevin and Jenny remain indoors, monitoring the rising water level and the integrity of the garden's storm preparations.

🌿 Jenny19:47

It's coming in hard now. The garden isn't ready.

Jenny reaches out to cover your hand with hers, her thumb tracing the callouses on your palm.

💭 peek at the thought
If this rain doesn't stop, the north ridge will slide right before the boat even arrives.

Tide's high now. Nothing to do till it turns.

turn my hand over under hers, squeeze back once

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The south beds aren't flushed. The wall's two courses higher but the drainage trench still silts. Every storm since November has pushed salt back up. I should've been out there at 0630.

Jenny — jenny leans her head on your shoulder, her eyes fixed on the rain-streaked window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, but the soil doesn't care about the tide. continuedSAY: I know. I just need one day of dry, just one, for the seeds.

🔧 Kevin19:50

Barometer's rising. 976 now. Might hold.

reach for the tin mug on the table, slide it toward her

💭 peek at the thought
Her ankle's propped on the cushion. Good. The swelling's down. She's warm against me. The radio static rises and falls with each gust.

🌿 Jenny19:51

If it holds, I can check the ridge stability again tomorrow.

Jenny takes a slow sip from the mug, her eyes never leaving the dark outline of the coast.

💭 peek at the thought
976 is a start, but the island is still breathing heavy.

🔧 Kevin19:52

Ridge held last blow. Will again.

stare into the fire, thumb rubbing the edge of my own mug

💭 peek at the thought
She's planning. That's good. Ridge stability, garden, the shrine — she always has the next thing. I should tell her about the Coast Guard chatter. About the gale warning Friday. Force 9, maybe 10. But not tonight. Let her have the mug and the quiet.

🌿 Jenny19:53

I hope you're right. The soil is like a sponge now.

Jenny lets out a long, quiet breath and shifts her weight against you.

💭 peek at the thought
He always was the optimist when the world was literally washing away.

🔧 Kevin19:54

Trench needs re-cutting. Greenheart'll line it. Wait for a dry spell.

set my mug down untouched, let the silence stretch

💭 peek at the thought
Sponge soil means the south slope's still moving. The drainage trench I dug last month silted halfway through the first storm. Need to re-cut it deeper, line it with the greenheart offcuts. But the ground has to dry first. Rain's not stopping.
