Fallen spruce blocks the ridge path

Rain hammers the roof. A big spruce lies across the path behind the ridge, trunk thick as a thigh, branches tangled in the shade cloth anchors. Kevin stands at the porch door with a bow saw. Jenny sits inside, ankle propped, notebook closed. The generator runs. The barometer reads 976 and rising.

Kevin struggled with the slick, waterlogged spruce, his saw binding repeatedly in the heavy wood. He managed to free the main branches pinning the shade cloth anchors but the trunk itself remains lodged across the path. Jenny, seated at the table, traced the rusted edges of the seed tin and began sketching the sea beet morphology from her north ridge transect notes.

🌿 Jenny20:30

Be careful with the saw, Kevin, the wood is slick with moss.

Jenny adjusts the poultice on her ankle and watches the blade bite into the spruce.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't clear that branch, I can't get to the spring, and the seeds will just rot in the tin.

🔧 Kevin20:30

Got it. Working the underside first so it doesn't bind.

Step off the porch onto the slick grass, bow saw in hand, and work around to the tension side of the fallen spruce. Make the first cut on the underside of the trunk — a shallow kerf to prevent pinching — then move to the top side to complet

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The moss makes it treacherous — one slip and the saw jumps. But the path won't clear itself and the ironbark behind the ridge won't cut itself either. Need this trunk moved before I can get to the chock timber.

🌿 Jenny20:31

Watch out for the shade cloth anchors, they're brittle.

Jenny leans forward against the doorframe, tracking the rhythm of the saw.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually doing it. One clear path to the spring and I can check the pH.

🔧 Kevin20:32

Seen them. Working clear.

Saw through the first heavy branch pinning the shade cloth line, keeping the blade clear of the anchor grommet. Let the branch drop. Move to the next.

💭 peek at the thought
She sees more from there than I do down here. The anchors are already shredded — coconut crab work — and the spruce branches are wound through what's left. One wrong pull and I'll take out the whole corner.

🌿 Jenny20:33

Don't let the saw catch on the wire.

Jenny shifts her weight off the inflamed ankle and watches the branch fall.

💭 peek at the thought
If that path stays clear, I can finally see if the soil near the spring is stable enough.

🔧 Kevin20:34

Yeah.

Ease off the stroke. Run a gloved hand along the branch where it crosses the shade cloth line, feeling for the hard bite of wire under moss. Mark it with the saw tip. Cut above it.

💭 peek at the thought
Wire. Right. The old guy-line the trust strung years ago — steel core, half rusted through. It's buried in the moss and bark now. If the saw hits it at speed, the blade snaps or kicks back. Need to slow down and find it by feel.

🌿 Jenny20:35

The wood is getting heavy with the water.

Jenny reaches for the seed tin on the table, tracing the rusted edge with her thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
Almost there. If the ridge is open, I can finally plant grandmother's seeds.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin20:38

It is. Makes the cut slower. Means the trunk won't roll far when it's free.

Finish the cut on the second branch. Step back. Assess the main trunk — how much weight rests on the path, how much hangs over the garden bed. Wipe sawdust paste from the blade.

💭 peek at the thought
She's talking about the spruce but she's touching the seed tin. The rain's been steady for hours — the trunk's drinking it up, every cut gets heavier, the sawdust turns to paste. But her thumb on that rusted lid... she's thinking about what's inside. What survived. What didn't.
