Waiting for the Swell

The tide reaches its peak, and the water begins to over the dock planks. The supply boat is a day away, and the humidity is suffocating.

Kevin struggled to reinforce the dock ramp against the rising tide, failing to secure the temporary supports properly in the soft wood. Jenny successfully prepared the landing area and organized the gear for the supply boat's arrival next day.

🔧 Kevin23:12

Kevin — walk back to the cottage and check the storm lashings on the generator shed and water tank overflow.

💭 peek at the thought
Water's kissing the underside of the decking now. If the swell picks up tonight, the south stringer goes first — it's the rottenest. Should've sistered it last week when the tide was low enough to work. No use cursing it now.

🌿 Jenny23:15

The tide is too high, Kevin. Watch the bolts.

pull the seed tin up onto the dry way and wrap my ankle to stop thebbing.

💭 peek at the thought
If the water reaches the tin, the mold will win, and I'll have lost everything grandmother left me.

🔧 Kevin23:15

South stringer's singing already. Heard it groan when the last set pushed under.

Check the mooring ring wedges and the sister knee bolts on the south piling before the next big set hits.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the bolts. The mooring ring mortise is splintered oak held together by wedges and prayer. One good surge and the whole works pulls free.

🌿 Jenny23:17

Just make sure it doesn't take the whole way out.

sketch the water patterns on the south- in my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the wood, but doesn't see the rot in the grain.

🔧 Kevin23:17

Wedges are tight. Sister knee's bolted. The ring mortise is the weak link — oak's splintered where the old bolts tore out.

Grab the 19mm wrench and the come-along from the shed. Rig a preventer line from the ring to the north piling base, take the load off the mortise.

💭 peek at the thought
The south piling's the keystone. If the ring pulls the mortise clean, the stringer goes, then the finger pier folds like a hinge. Wedges are vertical grain oak — they'll hold if the bolts don't snap.

🌿 Jenny23:19

Keen it steady, don't snap the cable.

check the seed tin for moisture condensation.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually doing something for once, but the salt is still eating that wood.

🔧 Kevin23:19

Just taking the slack. Not lifting.

Rig the come-along from the mooring ring to the north piling base, take up slack slowly until the line's just tight, cleat it off.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the line tension. Smart. The come-along's got maybe two tonnes on it — more than the splintered mortise will take if I crank it hard. Easy does it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:21

It's holding. For now.

wipe the condensation off the tin with a dry cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the ring is holding for now, but this humidity is a physical weight.

🔧 Kevin23:21

Hold through this tide. Next one's the test.

Walk the dock finger to the crane pad, check the south stringer deflection under the water weight. Tap the planks with the wrench handle — sound cores ring, rot thuds.

💭 peek at the thought
The preventer's singing quiet under the load. North piling's sound — drove that one deep last season. Ring mortise isn't moving. Good. But the tide's still pushing, and the swell period's shortening. Wind's backing southwest.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:23

The wood is too soft, Kevin. Watch the joints.

debride my ankle and change the dressing.

💭 peek at the thought
If that stringer goes, the boat can't even unload the supplies.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:23

Crane pad's on the main pier, not the finger. But the ramp bears on the stringer. I'll shore it.

Fetch the two greenheart offcuts and the 150mm stainless through-bolts from the workshop. Bolt them as temporary posts under the south stringer at the ramp joint, wedged into the seabed.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The south stringer's got maybe three sound inches at the landward end, rest is sponge. The joints are all that's keeping it from folding. If the supply boat's crane hooks a pallet onto the finger pier...

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:25

Make sure those posts are level. The tide is shifting.

apply the sea beet poultice to my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's shoring it up, but the salt is already working the new wood.
