Morning Humidity and Maintenance

Kevin sits on the steps cleaning the Yanmar injector pump sleeve with a small file. Jenny sits beside him, soaking her ankle in a basin of salt water while the heavy air hangs over the garden.

Kevin heads to the shed with the auger bit and brace, checking the lead screw for rust as he prepares to work. Jenny moves toward the north slope with the handheld radio and pH kit, nursing her wrapped ankle while the receding tide reveals the salt-strewn rocks.

🔧 Kevin01:45

Water's hot if you want the kettle.

file the injector pump sleeve, checking the bore with a fingertip every few strokes

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left leg still, but the swelling's down from yesterday. The heat's gone from the calf. Good sign. Barometer's dropped three millibars since dawn though — that westward bank isn't just sitting there. Need the north piling done before the tide turns.

🌿 Jenny01:47

I'll take it. Thanks. The salt is actually helping.

lean back against the stone wall, wincing slightly as the water hits the raw skin on the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
way's always fixing something while I'm just trying to stop the rot.

🔧 Kevin01:47

Good. Drink it slow.

set the file down, wipe metal dust on my trousers, pick up my own mug and blow across the steam

💭 peek at the thought
She winced. Still tender at the edges. But she's sitting up, talking, took the mug without asking for help. That's better than three days ago.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:49

I know. I need to get to the north slope today. I need to look at that soil.

look out at the half-weeded garden, tracing the line where the stone wall meets the scrub.

💭 peek at the thought
he thinks a hot drink fixes a systemic infection.

🔧 Kevin01:49

Tide's out in forty minutes. North piling first. You take the radio, sit the slope, I'll drill the mortise.

finish the mug in two swallows, set it on the step, stand and stretch the stiffness from my shoulders

💭 peek at the thought
North slope. She's been eyeing that ground since the storm took the topsoil. Salt crust's thick up there — she wants to test the amendment, see if the lime's holding. Her ankle won't like the climb.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:51

I'll bring the pH kit and the notebook. The acidity is probably worse than I thought.

stand up slowly, shifting the weight to my good leg, and grab the notebook and testing strips from the table.

💭 peek at the thought
he's always three steps ahead of the tide and my own body.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:51

Radio check on the hour. Channel sixteen.

walk to the shed, pull the 18mm auger bit and brace, check the bit's lead screw for rust

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving careful but she's moving. Notebook, strips, radio — she's got a plan. Good. The slope's been eating amendments since the September blow; if the pH's crashed again we'll know before we waste more lime. I'll drill the mortise while she works, sleeve it proper this time. Greenheart sister took the load last tide cycle but the shim's crushed. Won't hold another winter.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:53

Right. I'll keep the handheld on me.

wrap the ankle in the clean gauze, securing the bandage, and head for the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
I'll forget to check the radio if I get too deep into the soil.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:53

Take the spare battery pack too. Top shelf.

tuck the brace under my arm, grab the bronze sleeve from the workbench, head down the path toward the dock at a steady pace

💭 peek at the thought
Handheld VHF's battery's been dead since the crate recovery. She knows that. She's taking the shortwave handset off the shelf instead — smart. Lighter, longer range on the island. She'll have it at her belt. I'll hear her if the slope gives way or the radio crackles.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:55

On it.

step onto the porch, grab the battery pack from the shelf, and

💭 peek at the thought
I don't want the radio dying when I'm way up the ridge.
