Visit to the Shrine

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as the light begins to dip further. The rain has slowed, but the path to the ridge is slick with mud.

The rain has intensified into a heavy downpour from the west, blurring the view of the north ridge. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks of the lower tide pools while Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch of the cottage, the sound of water drumming on the heavy-duty tarp roof drowning out the silence between them.

🌿 Jenny02:15

The ridge is a mess. We aren't making it to the north slope until it clears.

Sit on the porch step, rubbing the swollen skin around the bandage while opening the damp notebook to a fresh page.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain, and if I don't get that pH reading tomorrow, I'm going to lose track of the season.

🔧 Kevin02:16

Tide's still high. North piling can wait for the ebb. You got anything useful on the soil pH before the rain hit?

sit on the porch step beside her, pull the notebook from my pocket and flip to the Yanmar test log page

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the ridge. The clay turns to grease after this much rain, and her ankle won't hold on a sideways slope. I'll wait on the north piling mortise until the tide drops properly anyway — two hours yet. The vibration in the Yanmar's been eating at me all afternoon. Prop shaft's true, sleeve's pressed and torqued. Only thing left is the mast bracket alignment or the engine mount itself.

🌿 Jenny02:17

It's 5.5 at best. way low for anything but the weeds. The seeds stay in the tin.

Trace the outline of a stunted sea beet leaf in the margin of the notebook with a charcoal pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
The north slope is too acidic for grandmother's seeds, and I can't bear to watch them rot out there.

🔧 Kevin02:18

Lime'll bring it up. Ground needs to drain first. The tin's dry?

lean back against the porch post, watch the drizzle come off the roof edge

💭 peek at the thought
5.5 explains the damping-off and the basil dying at the roots. Lime's by the shed door — burlap sack, maybe half left. Need to work it into the beds before the next planting, but the ground's too wet now. She's already decided on the seeds. Good. Means I don't have to argue.

🌿 Jenny02:19

It's dry. But the soil isn't ready. I'm not ready.

Rub the edge of the tin in my pocket, feeling the cold metal through the fabric.

💭 peek at the thought
If I plant them now and the salt gets in, I've failed the only thing left of her garden.

🔧 Kevin02:20

The tin'll keep. Seeds don't care about ready.

reach over and rest my hand on her forearm, thumb brushing the wet wool of her sleeve

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the soil. The tin in her pocket — the one marked E. She's carried it since the storm. Hasn't opened it. Hasn't said why. I've seen her hand find it a dozen times today. The barometer's steady at 976. Weather's holding. But she's not.

🌿 Jenny02:21

It's not just seeds, Kevin. It's the plan.

Pull away slightly, looking out at the dark ridge where the shrine disappears into the mist.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't understand the weight of the waste. If they die, they are gone forever.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:22

The plan was talk. I know.

pull my hand back, fist tightening on my knee

💭 peek at the thought
The plan. The sensory garden. The life we'd make. Eleven months of talking and the garden's still half weeds. She's right. I never built it. The shrine stones have more growing on them than my garden beds. She's been waiting for me to do something real, and I've been waiting for... what? The sea to change its mind? The supply boat to not come? Tom's letter sits in my pocket unanswered. Three months. Four hundred words. *Come home, Kev. Dad's not getting better.* I counted them too.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:23

Then stop talking.

Close the notebook with a sharp snap and stand up, wincing as the weight shifts on my own.

💭 peek at the thought
Every word he says feels like a stone hitting the water. I'm trying to build something here.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:24

Yeah.

stand up slow, wipe my palms on my thighs, walk to the shed and come back with the spade and the burlap sack of lime

💭 peek at the thought
She's done waiting. The snap of that notebook sounded like a parting line. She's standing there on a bad ankle in the dying light, looking at the ridge where the shrine disappears, and she's telling me to stop talking. The Yanmar vibration, the north piling mortise, the lime by the shed, the tin in her pocket, Tom's letter in mine — none of it matters if I don't move. She didn't say leave. She said stop talking.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:25

Don't start digging yet. The ground is still a sponge.

Limp toward the kitchen door, favoring my ankle with every step.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a shovel will fix the chemistry of the world. He's so way.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:27

Not digging. Spreading. Top-dress the beds while the rain's still washing it in.

walk to the garden gate, lean the spade against the post, untie the burlap sack and start flinging handfuls of lime over the nearest bed — broad casts, letting the drizzle take it down

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Digging now ruins structure. But standing here with a spade and lime sack looking stupid isn't the alternative. She's walking away — toward the kitchen, the radio, the warm dry. The tin's still in her pocket. Tom's letter's still in mine. The tide's dropping. Two hours to low water and the north piling mortise. I said I'd drill it. I said I'd tell her I choose this. She said stop talking.
