The First Rain Breaks

The wind finally picks up, bringing the first heavy drops against the tin roof. Kevin and Jenny find themselves confined indoors as the island prepares for the deluge.

Kevin attempted to reinforce the dock's north piling against the rising tide, but the swell made the work dangerous and ineffective. Jenny stayed at the cottage monitoring the barometer as the pressure continued to drop. The wet season heat hung heavy over the island as the storm moved in.

Radio check at sixteen hundred. If I'm not back by then, you call it in.

Pull on oilskin and boots, grab the crowbar and auger bit, head out to the dock to inspect the north piling mortise before the tide turns.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing southwest. Barometer's still dropping. We've got maybe an hour before the real weather hits. Need to check the north piling mortise one last time at low water — if the tide allows.

🌿 Jenny03:03

Watch the surge, Kevin. The barometer is dropping too fast for this.

Sit on the kitchen chair, wrap a damp cloth around my ankle, and open the notebook to sketch the way the water is pooling on the stone porch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get himself swept out for a piece of wood because I didn't fix it yesterday.

🔧 Kevin03:04

I'll watch the water, not the glass. Back before the turn.

Step out onto the porch, pull the hood low, and walk down the garden path to the dock — testing each plank underfoot as the wind rises.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. 977 and falling fast with wind backing southwest — that's not a normal front. Surge'll hit the north piling first, same as always. But the mortise is chiseled, pegs are cut, and the tide drops at 0930. Two hours to drive them home. I'll work the tide, not fight it.

🌿 Jenny03:05

Jenny — watch him through the window, gripping the pencil tight as I draw the first line of the rising tide.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so stubborn. The island doesn't care about his schedule.

🔧 Kevin03:06

Kevin — reach the north piling, brace against it, and probe the mortise with the crowbar — checking depth, clearing salt-crusted debris, feeling for solid wood to seat the pegs.

💭 peek at the thought
Dock planks hold. South piling sister plate took the night swell clean. North piling's the weak spot — rot at the waterline, mortise splintered from the last storm. Tide's still high but turning. Got to get the pegs driven before the water rises again.

🌿 Jenny03:07

Kevin, watch out for the swell!

Stand up, wincing as the weight shifts my ankle, and move to the radio to check the frequency.

💭 peek at the thought
If that piling goes, the wayhy goes with it.

🔧 Kevin03:08

Tide's not dropping. Barometer's lying or the surge is pushing back. Either way — mortise is clean. Two pegs, maybe three if the auger holds.

Drive the first oak peg home with the mallet, setting it deep into the mortise, then reach for the auger to bore the second hole.

💭 peek at the thought
Swell's building. Wind against tide — standing waves at the channel mouth. She heard the same thing I did. Mortise is deeper than last time, rot eaten back to clean heartwood. Good. Pegs will bite. But the water's climbing fast. Tide should be dropping. Barometer says otherwise.

🌿 Jenny03:09

Don't stay out there if the water starts hitting the deck!

Adjust the radio dial, listening for the static over the wind, my heart wiring against my ribs.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to lose a hand if that wave catches him now.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:10

Mortise holds. Two pegs set. Driving the third — then bolting. Ten minutes.

Drive the third oak peg, then fit the 150mm stainless through-bolt with washer and nyloc nut, tightening it down with the heavy wrench as the waves hammer the piling.

💭 peek at the thought
Water's licking the dock planks. Surge isn't waiting for the tide table. Second peg going in — auger bit bites clean, heartwood holds. One more. Then the through-bolt to lock it. But the swell's hitting the piling broadside now, each wave shaking the structure. If the water covers the mortise, I'm done. Work the problem.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:11

Come back now! The tide is turning!

Watch the white water breaking over the dock, gripping the radio microphone until my knuckles are white.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to die for a bolt. The water is too high.
