The Storm Breaks In

The wind howls through the eaves as the island is lost in grey darkness. You sit together by the lantern, watching the barometer and waiting for the worst to pass.

Kevin cinches the sail twine around the porch shutter's eyebolt, pulling taut until the gap closes to stop the leak. Jenny tightens the wrap on her ankle, rubbing the swollen skin while she watches the wind pick up the clouds.

Check the window latch again, Kevin. We need to stay dry.

Tighten the wrap on my ankle and rub the swollen skin.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is still dropping, and if the roof leaks, the seeds will be ruined before I even find the soil.

Already checked the kitchen. Porch next.

walk to the porch and test the south shutter latch by hand, leaning into it to feel for play

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The south shutter's been groaning since the wind backed west. If that latch gives, we lose the porch glass and the radio mast base gets soaked.

Use the twine if it moves at all. Don't just trust the bolt.

Reach for the sketchbook on the table to hold down the curling pages.

💭 peek at the thought
If that shutter is loose, the wind will catch it and rip the wood off the frame.

Got twine in my pocket. Doing it now.

pull sail twine from pocket, wrap it tight around the latch and the eyebolt on the frame, cinch it with a hitch and pull until the gap closes

💭 peek at the thought
The latch has a hairline gap at the bottom corner. Bolt's sound but the timber's swollen uneven — won't hold if the wind shifts hard.
