The Calm Before the Storm

The two of you sit inside the kitchen as the first heavy drops of rain hit the roof. The barometer needle flickers downward toward 970 hPa.

The steady rain continues overnight as the water tank reaches its maximum capacity. Kevin and Jenny stay inside the cottage to wait out the weather, watching the barometer continue to drop. Jenny's ankle remains swollen and painful despite the recent treatment.

Barometer's diving. Wind'll back southwest inside two hours. North piling sister needs the last two bolts torqued and the epoxy collar seated before the tide turns at 0930. You want the radio aerial or the generator shroud first?

The barometer's dropping faster than the tide. 970 and falling means we've got hours, not days. Need to secure the north piling sister plate properly before the swell builds — last time I rushed it, the epoxy didn't cure right. And the radio aerial's still shattered from the last blow. Jenny's ankle held the ridge walk yesterday but this kind of damp cold will stiffen it. Should get the generator shroud buttoned up and the dinghy lines doubled while there's still light.

The generator shroud. If that thing dies in the storm, we're in the dark with no water.

Stand up with a wince, hobble to the table, and grab the first aid kit.

way own is going to be my ruin if I don't get this poultice right, and the rain is getting worse.

Generator shroud first. North piling after. You sit this one out — I'll run the ratchet straps.

She's right about the generator — no power means no pump, no radio, no light. But she's moving too fast on that ankle. The poultice held yesterday but the swelling's still there, hot under the wrap. She won't ask for help and I won't offer it in words. I'll just make sure the shroud's done before she tries to climb the shed roof.

way. Just don't

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain, but at least I'm not out in the mud right now.
