The Calm before the Storm

The sun is high but the air remains thick and humid. Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen, the silence broken only by the barometer which continues its slow, steady descent.

The humidity is heavy as the sky flattens, signaling a shift in the wet season. Kevin checks the seals on the cottage and the generator shed, while Jenny manages the delicate seed-drying process in the stagnant heat.

Coffee's on. Mug on the shelf if you want it.

Pour two mugs from the pot on the stove, set one on the table near the radio.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's still dropping. 977 and falling slow. She's moving careful on that ankle but she's moving. Coffee first. Then the radio check — Kiel, Humber, Tom's frequency if the skip allows. The aerial insulator's holding but the aerial itself is still shattered. Might get receive only. Still worth the try.

way.

Jenny reaches for the mug, wincing as she shifts her weight on the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle feels like it's being squeezed by pliers, and the heat is just making it worse.

Sit. Keep it up.

Pull the chair out with my foot, nod at the cushion on the seat.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring it bad. The poultice held through the night but the swelling's back. Antibiotics should be kicking by now — second day. She won't say it hurts.

🌿 Jenny04:47

Thanks.

Jenny sits on the chair and props her swollen ankle on the cushion.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a cushion will fix an infection that's throbbing in my marrow.

Third dose at noon. Water first.

Slide the canteen across the table, then turn to the shortwave. Power on. Let the tubes warm. Dial to 4.4 MHz — Kiel weather.

💭 peek at the thought
She's pale under the tan. Dark circles. The fever took more out of her than she'll admit. Ankle's angry red tracking up the calf — lymphangitis if the metronidazole didn't catch the anaerobes. Third dose due at noon. Barometer's still sliding. Storm's not here yet but it's building.

🌿 Jenny04:49

I know.

Jenny takes a slow sip from the canteen, her eyes fixed on the seed tin on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so thirsty, but the fever is making my throat feel like way.

Humber next. Then 3.9.

Turn the dial to 6.2 MHz. Adjust the RF gain. Listen.

💭 peek at the thought
She's looking at the E tin. The one from the shrine. Still sealed, sides corroded through. She hasn't asked what was in it. I haven't told her. The radio hisses — static wall on 4.4. Skip's dead or the aerial's too far gone. Try 6.2, Humber Coastguard. Then Tom's frequency. 3.915. Night freq but worth a listen.

way but noise.

Jenny leans in toward the radio, her fingers tapping rhythmically on her swollen knee.

💭 peek at the thought
Just static. The world is becoming just static and salt air.
