The Air Thickens

The two of you meet in the kitchen as the first heavy drops of rain hit the corrugated metal roof.

Kevin returned from the dock after securing the new pegs, finding the air still heavy despite the drop in pressure. Jenny remained in the cottage, carefully tending to her swollen ankle in the salt water while waiting for the fever to subside.

🔧 Kevin04:34

Boat's not coming today. Barometer's still falling.

pour two mugs of coffee from the pot on the stove

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving better. Ankle's holding. Good. Rain's early — boat won't make the crossing in this. Need the north piling done before the tide turns.

🌿 Jenny04:35

I know. I need to debride the wound before the fever spikes again.

Wince as I shift weight off my left foot, reaching for the salt water on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
Five days until the boat is due, and my ankle feels like it's being squeezed in a vice.

🔧 Kevin04:36

Got fresh gauze and antiseptic on the shelf. I'll be at the dock. Back before the tide fills.

pull on oilskin jacket and boots, grab the auger and mallet from the porch, head out to the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's doing it herself again. Stubborn. But the red line's gone and the swelling's down. Salt water'll sting but it's clean. I'll finish the north piling while she tends it — two hours at low tide.

🌿 Jenny04:37

Be careful with the pilings, they're slick.

Sit heavily on the kitchen chair and soak the ankle in the basin of salt water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always working against the island while I'm just fighting my own skin.

🔧 Kevin04:38

Always am. Shout if the fever comes back.

walk down the path to the dock, auger and mallet in hand, boots gripping the wet planks

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Greenheart's slippery when wet. Tide's dropping fast — need the pegs driven before the water comes back. Sister knee's staged, bolts ready. Two hours max.

🌿 Jenny04:39

I will.

Reach for the tweezers and begin to debride the grit from the swollen skin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the fever comes back I'll be too weak to even reach for the radio.

🔧 Kevin04:40

Kevin — brace against the piling, drive the first sister peg home with the mallet, auger the through-bolt hole, thread the 150mm stainless bolt with washer and nyloc nut, torque it down, repeat for the second peg

💭 peek at the thought
Sound of the tweezers clicking against the bowl. She doesn't make a sound. The tide's out far enough — north piling exposed down to the mudline. Mortise is chiseled clean from yesterday. Auger bites easy in greenheart. First peg goes in tight. Second follows. Through-bolts next. Washers, nylocs. Torque them down. Water's already pushing at the edges of the sandbar.

🌿 Jenny04:41

(Quietly, mostly to myself)

Bite my lip to stifle a groan as I pull a small piece of clouded tissue from the edge of the wound.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt stings, but I have to get the infection out.

🔧 Kevin04:42

Kevin — gather auger and mallet, wipe bolt heads clean with rag, climb back up the dock planks toward the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Second bolt seated. Nyloc locked. The sister knee's solid — greenheart to greenheart, steel through both. Water's lapping at the sandbar now. Tide turns in minutes. Pack the tools. Walk back up the path. Coffee'll be cold but the pot's still warm.

🌿 Jenny04:43

You're early.

Drop the tweezers into the salt water and look at my throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's back so soon; the wind is already picking up.
