The Morning Intruder

Kevin and Jenny stand by the tomato rows while the heavy air hangs over the island. A large coconut crab is retreated beneath the shade cloth, clutching a shredded leaf of a young heirloom tomato seedling.

The morning air is heavy and still, with the pressure dropping as the barometer continues its descent. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools near the south beach.

Jenny lunges forward, reaching for the garden trowel to nudge the crab away from the plant.
