The Approaching Squall

You and Jenny gather in the kitchen as the first heavy drops of rain hit the thatch.

The air in the cottage grows heavy as the pressure drops. Kevin replaces the cracked porcelain insulator on the shortwave radio, wrapping the joint tightly in self-amalgamating tape to prevent an arc. Inside, Jenny meticulously lays out the waxy succulent leaves on paper towels, sketching their salt-resistant margins in the notebook while the wind begins to whistle.

🌿 Jenny19:07

Get the specimens inside, Kevin. Now.

way sweeps the sea much leaves off the table and into the dry wooden box.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if the wind shifts now, the samples are ruined.

🔧 Kevin19:07

Already on it.

grab the succulent specimens wrapped in damp cloth and the sea beet morphology notebook from the porch table, carry them inside to the kitchen table, set them clear of the stove's heat

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving fast. The barometer's been dropping all day — 1006 and steady was the last I checked, but that was hours ago. Rain on the thatch means the front's here.

🌿 Jenny19:11

Put them on the paper towels, not the wood. The wood breathes.

unroll the sea way and carefully lay the leaves out on dry absorbent paper.

💭 peek at the thought
The humidity is going to ruin the sketches if I don't get them flat.

🔧 Kevin19:11

Kevin — move the specimens from the wooden box onto the dry paper towels spread near the stove, arrange the succulent plants flat without overlapping, open the notebook to a fresh page and set it beside them

💭 peek at the thought
Right. Paper towels. The wood holds salt and damp from the limpets earlier.

🌿 Jenny19:15

way. Now check the radio insulator. That crack is looking like a map.

pick up the pencil and start sketching the margin structure of the largest leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
He's finally moving. I need to see those salt enough clearly before they curl.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:19

Kevin — walk to the radio shelf, pull the shortwave down, inspect the porcelain insulator at the mast base where the self-amalgamating tape covers the crack, check for carbon tracking or moisture ingress

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The self-amalgamating tape over the porcelain insulator's crack has been holding, but rain this heavy tests everything. If the insulator arcs, we lose the radio until I can swap the spare — assuming the spare's still good after months in salt air.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:25

It's wider. I can see the way fraying under the tape.

lean over the table, squinting at the salt way on the leaf surface.

💭 peek at the thought
If that insulator goes, we're deaf to the mainland own the boat comes.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:25

Tape's rotted. Swapping the insulator now before it arcs.

fetch the spare porcelain insulator from the tool shelf, uncoil the antenna lead from the cracked insulator on the radio body, unscrew the damaged insulator, fit the spare, re-secure the antenna lead, wrap the join with fresh self-amalgamat

💭 peek at the thought
The tape's fraying. Salt and UV have been eating it for months. If the insulator arcs in this wet, the radio's dead. I have the spare porcelain insulator — already installed on the mast, but the old one's still on the radio body. Need to swap it before the crack tracks to ground.
