The Squall Arrives

The trade wind picks up sharply, carrying the scent of ozone and heavy spray. The first fat drops of rain hammer the tin roof of the cottage as the tide begins to turn.

Kevin and Jenny secured the heirloom seed tin and latched both kitchen windows against the approaching squall. The barometer held steady at 1007 hPa, but the heavy stillness in the air suggested the storm was still building offshore.

Kevin, get the seed tin off the porch now!

Stand up abruptly, knocking the notebook shut, and run to the porch to grab the tin.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast and the wind just shifted south; we're going to get hit hard tonight.

On it.

Walk to the porch, grab the heirloom seed tin, carry it inside and set it on the kitchen table away from the door.

💭 peek at the thought
Front's here early. Rain on the roof means the barometer was right — drop below 1008 with this humidity and the swell comes faster than you think. Seed tin on the porch is dead weight if it gets soaked again.

Check the latches on the kitchen window, quickly.

Walk to the window to ensure the frame is shut tight against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the tin is inside now, but the roof is going to be deafening like this.

Kevin — check and dog down both latches on the kitchen window, then step to the bedroom window and secure those too.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing west now. Rain horizontal inside ten minutes if the latches don't hold.
