Morning Routines and Rising Pressure
Kevin stands at the generator shed wiping diesel from his fingers after stripping the fuel filter, the clean element catching the light. Jenny moves slowly down the porch steps with her driftwood cane, pausing to test her weight on the bandaged ankle before heading toward the garden gate. The barometer on the porch rail reads 1001 hPa and the needle trembles downward as the tide pushes up the beach below the dock.
The morning air is heavy and humid, a light onshore breeze pushing salt spray inland. Jenny heads toward the north ridge, leaning on her driftwood cane to inspect the widening cracks in the earth, while Kevin goes to the generator shed to retrieve the soil auger and cedar stakes, planning to meet her at the incline.
North slope first. Trenches before the rain hits proper.

The generator is fine for now. I need to check the erosion before the shrine goes under.

Take the auger. Stakes in the shed. I'll meet you there.

I'll be at the transect. Don't be late.
Start climbing the incline toward the north ridge, watching the way the grass is pulling away from the roots.

(silent, just a nod she won't see)
grab the soil auger and three cedar stakes from the shed, then follow the path up toward the north ridge

Jenny — reach the edge of the erosion zone and kneel to sketch the widening cracks near the shrine.

How far back from the stone?
kneel beside the nearest crack and drive the auger in, turning slow to feel the layers

At least three meters. The roots are already exposed over there.
Measure the distance from the shrine base to the first major fissure and mark it in the notebook.
