Midday work at dock and shrine
Kevin is at the dock checking the Yanmar under load; Jenny is at the old shrine inspecting soil stability and sketching erosion.
Kevin tests the generator at load to ensure the new filter is holding up under pressure. Jenny heads to the north ridge to monitor the sea beet seedlings and check the soil moisture levels. The air remains heavy and humid as the overcast clouds thicken.
You stand at the dinghy's transom, load bank leads clipped to the Yanmar's output terminals. The engine idles clean, no whine from the raw water pump. You advance the throttle to 1800 RPM, watching the ammeter climb. The prop wash cuts clean lines in the high tide. No vibration in the mount bolts, no shudder in the tiller. You hold it there, counting seconds.
Kevin — hold throttle at 1800 RPM, watching ammeter and mount bolts for another two minutes, then idle down and shut off.

Kevin — unclip the load bank leads, coil them neat, stow in the locker. Walk back up the dock to the shed and hang the auger on its peg.

You crouch at the upper weep hole, auger in hand, the sketchbook propped on a flat stone. The earth here is soupy, the auger sinking too easily. You twist gently, feeling for the blockage. Above you, the north ridge fracture catches the light — wider at the top, narrowing downward. You mark the stake positions in pencil, then set the auger aside and reach for the brush bundles.
Hold on, just hold on.
Brush the loose grit from the carved names on the shrine stone to see the depth of the letters.

Not today, Kevin.
Stand up slowly, shifting your weight to the good leg to look back at the north ridge.
