Morning in the kitchen, rat hole patched

Kevin and Jenny stand in the cottage kitchen, the air thick with the smell of boiled limpets and woodsmoke. Kevin wipes his hands on a rag, the wire wool and putty knife still on the table where he sealed the baseboard gap behind the pantry shelves. Jenny lifts the lid of the pot on the stove, steam curling into the flat grey light coming through the window.
