The Turning Tide

The tide is beginning to come in, bringing a slight cooling breeze. You and Jenny meet back at the cottage to prepare for the evening chill.

Kevin checked the rain tank and confirmed 394 litres, then reviewed ridge survey notes against Jenny's fresh fracture sketches. Jenny sketched north ridge fracture patterns while managing ankle pain, and both discussed the unstable clay path to the sea cave.

The pressure is dropping again. We should check the rain tank levels before it gets dark.

Lean back against the stone wall and adjust the cold pack on my swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
My own is throbbing in time with the tide, but I need to know if that clay will actually hold before the storm hits.

Tank's at three-ninety-four this morning. But I'll check again.

Walk to the back of the cottage and inspect the rain tank gauge, wiping condensation off the sight glass to read the level.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the pressure. Tank's been holding but I haven't checked since the storm. Need to verify before dark anyway.

🌿 Jenny17:15

That's enough for now, but don't get comfortable with the water for the garden yet.

Open my notebook and sketch the fracture patterns on the north ridge while the light is decent.

💭 peek at the thought
It's nearly full, but if the boat misses us next time, we're in trouble with the irrigation.

Garden's on tank water only if the spring fails. Spring's running clear.

Lean against the porch post, watching the tide line creep up the beach, listening for the generator's steady hum.

💭 peek at the thought
She's mapping the ridge fractures while I watch water. Good. We need both.

🌿 Jenny17:18

Clear water doesn't help if the ridge slides away with the seeds.

Trace the line of a major fracture in the sketch with a charcoal pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
The spring is clear, but the soil on the ridge is shifting—I can feel it in the air.

🔧 Kevin17:19

The tamarind roots are holding the south slope. North ridge has nothing but shallow soil over shale.

Pull the notebook from my pocket, flip to the ridge survey page, and compare her fresh charcoal lines to my pencil marks from the last transect.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The north ridge fractures have deepened since the last storm. If that slope goes, it takes the spring catchment with it.

🌿 Jenny17:32

Then we have to test the clay layer near the sea cave. It's the only stable ground left.

Shift my weight and wince as the throbbing intensifies with the movement.

💭 peek at the thought
If the ridge is just shale, grandmother's seeds won't survive the first heavy rain.

🔧 Kevin17:32

Clay's stable. But the path there crosses the north ridge fracture zone. Your ankle won't make it.

Close my notebook and set it on the porch table, then walk to the kitchen to check the kettle on the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
The sea cave clay held when we tested it last month. But getting there with her ankle like this — she shouldn't be walking that far on it.
