The approaching front

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage porch as the wind picks up and the first heavy drops of rain fall.

Kevin and Jenny argued about priorities at the kitchen table while rain lashed the cottage. Kevin insisted the south slope fracture needed immediate attention, while Jenny wanted to document north ridge drainage patterns and test the sea cave clay. Neither conceded, and the conversation ended with Jenny snapping her notebook shut in frustration.

You're soaked through. Get inside, kettle's on.

Step back from the porch rail to let her pass, one hand on the door frame, the other reaching for the tin mugs on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slow, favouring the ankle hard. Good she made it back before this broke proper. The barometer's still sliding and that wind's got teeth in it now.

🌿 Jenny16:24

The north ridge is saturated, Kevin. I need to check the clay by the cave.

Jenny limps into the kitchen, wincing as her weight shifts her ankle, and sets the damp notebook on the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is screaming and the rain is just going to wash the survey away before I even finish the notebook.

🔧 Kevin16:26

North ridge can wait. South slope's the one breathing. You sit. I'll check the cave clay at first light if the wind drops.

Set two mugs on the table, pour boiling water over tea leaves, push one toward her chair without looking at her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not listening. Ankle's hot to touch even from here, and she's talking geology in a gale. The cave's on the south face — if the clay's moving there, the whole slope's coming down on the garden wall we just built.

🌿 Jenny16:27

It's not just the clay, it's the only stable patch I've found.

Jenny sits with a sharp intake, propping her swollen ankle up on a stool, and opens the notebook to a dry page.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I can just sit here, but if the soil shifts now, grandmother's seeds are gone forever.

🔧 Kevin16:28

Stable until it isn't. Drink the tea.

Pull the chair out opposite her, sit heavy, wrap both hands round my own mug and watch steam rise instead of her face.

💭 peek at the thought
Stable patch on a moving island. She's mapping ground that won't stay put, same as me fixing engines that shake themselves apart. The wind's hitting the porch hard now — shutters rattling. She won't stop. Neither will I.

🌿 Jenny16:29

If I don't record the drainage patterns now, the whole survey is a guess.

Jenny picks up a pencil and starts sketching the fracture lines she saw on the ridge, her hand shaking slightly despite the cold.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so quiet when I'm frustrated, like he's waiting for me to stop talking.

🔧 Kevin16:31

The survey's done, Jen. You walked the transect. You counted the Carex. You drew the glands. That's not a guess.

Reach across the table, two fingers on the wet notebook page to still it, not grabbing her hand — just the paper.

💭 peek at the thought
Her hand's shaking. Cold or pain or both. The pencil line jumps across the page — she's drawing fractures she can't fix with graphite. Rain's hammering the roof now, steady and loud. The barometer was 1009 this morning. It's lower now. I can feel it in my chest.

🌿 Jenny16:32

It's the morphology. If the clay layer shifts, the seeds won't take root anyway.

Jenny pulls the notebook back slightly, her pencil hovering over the sketch as she stares at the rain lashing the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't see the way the water pools near the cave; it's going to slide.

🔧 Kevin16:36

Then we plant deeper. Or we don't. Either way the pencil doesn't hold the hill.

Let the notebook go. Lift my mug, drink tea scalding hot, set it down hard enough to ring.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Clay shifts, seeds fail, garden dies, we eat corned beef until the boat comes or doesn't. But she's drawing lines in a storm for ground that moves in dark. The Yanmar's vibration is in my fingertips still — half throttle, prop shaft true, bracket reinforced. Something else. Deeper. The wind gusts, porch shuddering.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:41

It's not just the hill, Kevin. It's the salt. If the pH isn't right, my grandmother's garden just rots before it starts.

Jenny snaps the notebook shut, the sound sharp in the small kitchen, and rubs her throbbing ankle with a palm.

💭 peek at the thought
He makes it sound so simple like the island isn't trying to swallow us whole.
