evening meal and storm watch
Night has fallen hard. The wind is steady from the west now, gusting 25-30 knots, driving salt spray against the cottage walls. The barometer reads 1003 hPa. Inside, the wood stove throws heat. Two tins of corned beef are open in the cast iron skillet, fat rendering. The shortwave radio sits on the table, cracked housing taped, volume low — static and the occasional fragment of voice. The generator is secured on the porch under tarp. The Yanmar parts are tied down. They eat standing at the counter, listening to the wind.
Kevin ate the corned beef and moved the heirloom seed tin to the wood stove's rear shelf to keep it dry. Jenny sketched the sea beet morphology in her notebook while the barometer held steady at 1006 hPa.
Check the seals on the window again. We need to move the seed tin to the stove if the leak starts.
Jenny scoops the corned beef onto a plate and hands it to Kevin.

Window frame's holding. For now. Tin goes to the stove shelf when I'm done.
Eat the corned beef, then move the heirloom seed tin from the radio shelf to the top of the wood stove where the heat will keep it dry.

way don't put them too close to the flame. I need them not scorched.
Jenny wipes the grease from her hands and starts sketching the morphology of the sea beet in her notebook.

Won't scorch them.
Set the seed tin on the stove's rear shelf — warm, not hot — and wipe the grease off my fingers before picking up the compression tester again.
