The Morning Watch

Kevin sits on the porch steps checking the barometer while the sun rises over the garden wall. Jenny leans back in a chair with her ankle propped up on a crate as she watches the tide line.

Kevin checked the south piling brace at low tide and drove the final through-bolt home, then ran the Yanmar at load in the dinghy. Jenny limped to the sea cave at low tide, tested the clay stability, sketched the soil strata, and verified the heirloom seed tin's condition.

Coffee's on. Mug on the porch rail if you want it.

Sit on the porch steps, mug in hand, watching the garden and the tide.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's holding steady at 1013. Rising. Good sign. Tide's high — can't get at the south piling brace until it drops. Jenny's favouring the ankle still, but the swelling's down from yesterday. Fever broke. She's watching the tide line like she's reading something in it.

way.

Reaches for the tin, tracing the rusted edge with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the tide, but the light is too good to be miserable about it.

Supply boat's due in four days. Could send it back with them if you want it off the island.

Sip coffee, steam rising, eyes on the garden wall where the shade cloth ripples.

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracing the rust on tin E. The one from the north cliffs. Still sealed. Still heavy. She's been turning it over in her hands for days now.

🌿 Jenny18:03

Not yet.

Tightens her grip on the seed tin, the metal cold against her palm.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks these are just seeds, but they are the only part of her garden I have left.

🔧 Kevin18:13

Right.

Set the mug down on the step. Pull the pocketknife from my belt and hold it out, handle first.

💭 peek at the thought
Not yet. Means she's decided something but hasn't said it. Means she's waiting. For what — the boat, the tide, me to ask? The rust flakes under her thumb. That tin's been sealed forty years maybe. Whatever's inside doesn't care about timing.

🌿 Jenny18:20

I need to check the cave today.

Looks at the knife, then out toward the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
If he wants to help, he should look at the clay, not offer me knives.

🔧 Kevin18:20

Low tide's 10:30. Ankle holds?

Stand, wipe hands on trousers, glance at the north ridge where the cave sits.

💭 peek at the thought
The cave. Where we stashed the heirloom tin wrapped in tarp and weighted with rock. She wants eyes on it. Tide's high now — cave mouth'll be submerged until the ebb. Clay path down's treacherous wet. Her ankle's better but not right. She knows the tide. Knows the path. She's asking anyway.

🌿 Jenny18:21

I'll manage.

Winces slightly as she shifts weight, reaching for her notebook and pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
It's swollen, but the clay won't wait for me to go down.
