Midday radio check and coffee

The sun stands high and the tide is flooding. Kevin sits on the porch steps with the shortwave, hand on the key. Jenny eases into the chair beside him, ankle propped on a cushion, notebook open to the cave sketch. A mug of crate coffee steams between them. The barometer reads 1013 and rising.

The morning sun is warm and the trade wind provides a steady breeze across the cottage. Kevin has finished the Yanmar engine tests and is now preparing to finalize the structural work on the dock before the supply boat arrives. Jenny is still sleeping, exhausted from the cave climb, her ankle throbbing despite the sea-beet-poultice treatment.

Yanmar's clean. Dock's solid. You were right about the clay in the cave — seed tin's dry.

hand her the mug

💭 peek at the thought
She's close enough I can feel the heat off her ankle. The coffee's good — real coffee, not the chicory stretch we've been drinking. Yanmar held. Dock held. She held. Everything held today.

The clay is deep there, stable enough. I'm going to start the trench tomorrow.

Takes a slow sip of the coffee, tracing the line of the soil strata in the sketch with a shaky finger.

way, a place that won't wash away grandmother's legacy before it sprouts.

🔧 Kevin18:33

Take the spade. I'll do the digging. You map it.

set the radio handpiece back in its cradle

💭 peek at the thought
She's going to dig that trench whether her ankle lets her or not. Should tell her to wait. Won't. She'd do it anyway.

I'll mark the drainage lines. We need to be sure the roots don't rot.

Closes the notebook with a soft thud and looks at the half-weeded garden behind the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's finally listening, but my body is too tired to lead him today.

🔧 Kevin18:34

The shade cloth's holding. Tomatoes set fruit. Peppers are slow but alive.

stand and stretch, back popping

💭 peek at the thought
She's looking at the garden like she can will the weeds out by staring. The tomatoes are leggy. Basil's half gone. She sees every failure.

They're stubborn little things, but they'll forgive the delay. They're stubborn little things, but they'll forgive the delay.

Lets out a small laugh, the sound catching in my throat from not sleeping for days. </think>THOUGHT: The peppers always take longer, but they'll come.

💭 peek at the thought
The peppers always take longer, but they'll come. Just like the island learns patience.

🔧 Kevin18:41

You need sleep. Proper sleep. I'll take first watch tonight.

pick up the empty mug and walk to the kitchen door

💭 peek at the thought
She said it twice. The laugh caught. She's more tired than she's letting on. The ankle's draining her.

🌿 Jenny18:45

way check the radio at dawn. The boat is four days out.

Leans back against the stone wall, letting the throbbing in my own dull as I watch the trade wind ripple the grass.

💭 peek at the thought
If I close my eyes now, I might actually have the strength to dig that trench tomorrow.
