The Night Before the Storm
The rain finally begins to fall, heavy drops drumming against the tin roof as they huddle in the light of the stove.
The rain lashes down in heavy sheets from the west, turning the world into a grey blur and drumming rhythmically against the cottage roof. Inside, the air is thick with the smell of damp earth and woodsmoke. The tide is receding, exposing the slick rocks of the shore, but the churning surf keeps the island grounded.
Coffee's hot if you want it.
Pour two mugs from the kettle on the stove, set one on the porch table under the overhang.

Thanks. Leave it right there.
Jenny reaches out a shaky hand, wrapping both palms around the mug to absorb the heat, staring at the rain-sheet off the porch.

(quiet) Ankle still waking you?
Lean against the doorframe, cradling my own mug, watching the rain fall sideways off the porch roof.

It doesn't stop. Everything does.
Jenny takes a slow sip of the coffee, her eyes never leaving the dark line of the north ridge where it meets the sea.

Ridge held through worse. '98 took the east wall clean off. This one's slower.
Step onto the porch proper, boots quiet on the boards. Set my mug on the railing. Look north where the ridge disappears into rain.

The clay is moving, Kevin. It's not holding.
Jenny shifts her weight, wincing as the swollen ankle throbs through the bandage.

How much?
Turn from the railing. Face her. Weight shifts to my good leg.

Enough to lose the soil.
Jenny looks back down at her notebook, her thumb tracing the thick lines of the soil strata sketch.
