Afternoon Preparation Check

The onshore breeze picks up slightly as the sun peaks. Kevin and Jenny meet in the cottage to discuss the plan for the coming boat.

The tide is rising steadily against the south pilings, bringing the water closer to the dock. The heat is heavy at 32°C, and the overcast sky offers no cooling relief as the pair prepares for the supply boat's arrival in two days.

🔧 Kevin21:38

Boat's confirmed. Two days, high tide window. Captain said he'll hold two hours. We need the dock solid, tank topped, dinghy fueled and lines ready. You stay off that ankle — I'll run the dock work.

walk to the dock with tools and new rope to inspect chocks, mooring ring, and sister brace at low tide

💭 peek at the thought
The supply boat's confirmed for two days out. Need to make sure the dock can take her alongside, the tank's full, and the dinghy's ready to run lines. Jenny's ankle is holding — poultice seems to be drawing clean — but she shouldn't be hauling heavy. I'll take the winch gear and the new rope down to the dock now, check the chocks and the sister brace one more time at low water.

I'll check the tank levels and organize the gear. Just... be careful with the south pilings, they're soft again.

Sit on the porch chair, rubbing the swollen skin around the bandage, and sketch the morphology of a sea beet leaf in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
way thinks he can do it all alone, but the dock is rotting from the inside. way ankle feels like a hot poker.

🔧 Kevin21:42

South piling's the priority. I'll drive the wedges, reset the collar, and sister the next section up if the timber's sound. Tank's reading three-eighty-five — good for the boat's water take. Dinghy's fueled, Yanmar idling clean.

walk down to the dock with heavy wrench, mallet, and the coil of new half-inch rope to work the south piling and mooring ring at low water

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the pilings. The rot line's crept another handspan past the sister brace since the last storm. Greenheart's holding but the oak wedges in the mooring ring mortise are working loose with each swell. Need to drive them deeper and maybe add a second collar clamp before the boat comes alongside.

🌿 Jenny21:43

Watch the rot line on those braces. It's deeper than it looked yesterday.

Stand up slowly, limp to the rain tank to check the water level with the glass float.

💭 peek at the thought
way's so focused on the wood, he doesn't see the salt eating everything. my head is throbbing with the fever again.

🔧 Kevin21:43

Noted. Copper sulfate and steel strap. I'll peel back the brace face, treat the rot, and strap it. You get the tank reading written down and the gear sorted.

pry the south brace face planks with the crowbar to expose the rot pocket, then brush copper sulfate into the softened timber and drill for a 10mm stainless through-bolt strap across the joint

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen it too. The rot's tracking up the inside face where the brace meets the piling — salt and oxygen getting in behind the greenheart. If that joint lets go, the whole south corner walks. Need to expose it, treat with copper sulfate, and bolt a steel strap across the face before the boat's weight hits the dock.

🌿 Jenny21:49

The tank is at 385. We have enough for the boat, but don't overfill.

Walk back to the porch, prop my leg up on a crate, and open the tin of grandmother's seeds just to look at them.

💭 peek at the thought
way's working too hard in this heat. My fever is going to spike if I don't get it up soon.

🔧 Kevin21:49

Logged. I'll stop the generator pump at three-sixty. Leave the rest for catchment.

finish drilling the strap holes through the brace and piling, drive the 10mm stainless through-bolt with washers and nyloc nut, torque to 35Nm, then brush copper sulfate over the exposed rot pocket and the bolt heads

💭 peek at the thought
Three-eighty-five gives us fifteen litres of margin before the overflow kicks. Boat'll take maybe two hundred if they're dry. That leaves us tight but workable. The seed tin on her lap — she's checking the heirlooms for the handoff. Good. Means she's thinking past the boat.
