EVENING

The tide reaches high mark, lapping against the reinforced dockings as the temperature begins to dip ever slightly.

The heat of the dry season lingers as the sun begins to set, leaving the air still and dry. Kevin and Jenny spend the evening at the cottage, monitoring the falling barometer and preparing for the supply boat's arrival in two days.

Brace is holding. Rot hasn't crept past the sister plank.

Crouch at the dock edge, flashlight beam on the stainless through-bolt and greenheart sister knee where they meet the south piling. Watch the joint flex as a swell pushes under the dock planks.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's at the brace now. Good. Can see the joint work under load. Wedges holding, bolt tight. Rot line's still a handspan above the greenheart — same as noon. That's something.

Check the nut again. It looked loose.

Close the way and shift weight away from my ankle, wincing as the throb pulses with the movement.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a bolt is a miracle, but the salt is eating the wood from the inside.

Checked it at noon. Thirty-five foot-pounds, nyloc engaged. But I'll look again.

Swing the beam up to the nut, wipe salt crust off the flats with a thumb, seat the 19mm wrench and lean into it — feel for any give.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right to worry. Vibration'll walk a nut loose in a week. But I torqued it to 35 with the nyloc. Still — her eyes caught something mine didn't.

🌿 Jenny21:53

Check the wood around the housing. The greenheart looks soft.

Stand up slowly, leaning against the whitewashed stone while watching him work the bolt.

💭 peek at the thought
If that moves even a hair, the whole section is going to the sea.

🔧 Kevin21:54

Greenheart's iron. But I'll look.

Run the light along the greenheart face where it meets the piling, then the mortise cheeks — probe the bolt holes with the nail puller tip, feel for spongy fibre or frass.

💭 peek at the thought
Greenheart doesn't go soft. Not in six months. But salt and bore worms find everything eventually. She's got the light angle different — might see what I missed.

🌿 Jenny21:55

Look at the edges of the hole. If it's crumbling, the bolt won't matter.

Reach down to touch the wood near the joint, testing for softness with my fingernail.

💭 peek at the thought
It's not just the wood, it's the salt. Everything is dissolving.

🔧 Kevin21:56

Edges are clean. No dust, no crumble.

Scrape the nail puller hard around the bolt hole perimeter — starboard cheek first, then port — flick the blade to clear salt, shine the light straight down the bore.

💭 peek at the thought
She's methodical. Good. The hole's the weak link — end grain takes water, swells, lets go. If the mortise cheeks are punky the bolt just pulls through.

🌿 Jenny21:57

Check the threads. The bolt might be stripped just under the surface.

way over his shoulder, ignoring the spike in my ankle as I watch the light.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wood is solid, then it's just the vibration from the engine.
