Midday at the cottage

They meet on the porch at midday. The wind has backed northeast and freshened, driving low cloud across the hilltop. Jenny sits with her ankle propped, the dry bag of supply boat gear beside her. Kevin comes up the path from the dock, wiping salt from his hands. The barometer holds at 1012. The supply boat is three days out. Lunch is cold corned beef and limpets in tin mugs.

Kevin uses the radio to confirm the supply boat's arrival in two days. Jenny focuses on maintaining the cottage shutter and managing her painful ankle infection while the dry season heat sets in.

Boat's firm. Three days at high tide, two-hour window. Captain sounded like he meant it.

Set the radio on the porch table, log the contact, then sit opposite her with a mug of corned beef broth and limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
Three days. The boat holds to its word this time. Lines are holding, generator's clean, south brace bought us more than I expected. Jenny's ankle isn't spreading. We're still here.

Three days is long enough for the weather to turn. Did he mention the fuel levels?

Take a slow sip of the salty broth, wincing as the movement shifts in my ankle, and watch the clouds gather over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
Three days. If the boat doesn't show, I'll be out of antibiotics by then.

Didn't ask. Should've.

Reach for the radio, key the mic on 2182. "Sorrel Island calling supply vessel. Kevin. Quick follow-up — what's your fuel margin for the crossing?"

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Three days is a weather generation here. Captain didn't volunteer fuel state, and I didn't ask — slipped my mind with the swell report.

🌿 Jenny21:33

If the wind picks up more, he won't make that two-hour window anyway.

Lean back against the stone wall, feeling the heat radiate from my ankle, and wait for the static to clear.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so focused on the schedule and forgets the variables.

Hold the mic off the hook, listening to the carrier wave hiss. The captain's voice comes through thin but readable: "Sorrel Island, copied. Fuel's tight — four hours at cruise, maybe five if I trim the throttle.

💭 peek at the thought
She knows these waters better than she lets on. The northeast chop on the bar at high tide with a falling tide behind it — he'll need every litre of reserve.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:35

That's a dangerous margin for this channel.

Tighten my grip on the mug, eyes tracking the way the wind is whipping the grass on the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
Four hours? That's barely enough if the current is pushing against them.

🔧 Kevin21:35

Copy that. We'll have the dinghy at the dock ready to receive. If you're holding outside, we'll come to you.

💭 peek at the thought
Four hours at cruise. The bar crossing alone eats two if the swell's confused. If the wind backs west like the barometer hints, he's burning reserve fighting current. No margin for a go-around.

🌿 Jenny21:37

I'll be at the way. Just signal when you see the mast.

Click the radio off, the silence heavy in the room, while the throbbing in my leg pulses hot.

💭 peek at the thought
I won't be getting into a dinghy with this ankle. Not these swells.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:37

You're not walking the ridge path in three days. I'll bring the dinghy up the beach if the swell allows. Shorter carry.

Set the radio down, blow across the mug, take a sip. The broth's gone cold.

💭 peek at the thought
She's already deciding she'll walk the ridge path to the dock in three days. Ankle be damned. I've seen her do worse.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:38

Just make sure the gear is dry when you get.

Look at the tin of seeds on the table, wondering if the soil will still be there by the time the boat arrives.

💭 peek at the thought
The beach is a mess when the tide is in, he'll have trouble landing.
