← Day 696

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the hilltop

Underway and on the ridge

Kevin is at the helm of the dinghy working the Yanmar; Jenny is on the hilltop with her notebook and pH kit.

Kevin stands at the dock, watching the tide pull away from the shore, exposing the slick, barnacle-encrusted pilings. The air is warm, but the light onshore breeze carries the scent of salt and drying seaweed. The barometer shows a slow drop, suggesting a shift in weather despite the dry season label.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You hold the tiller steady as the dinghy cuts a slow wake through the chop. The Yanmar's vibration hums through the deck plates at anything above idle. You watch the compass and the reef markers, keying the VHF every few minutes to update the supply boat captain. The mainland is a smudge on the horizon.

Kevin — hold course at low RPM, watch compass and reef markers, key VHF on 2182 with position update

💭 peek at the thought
The vibration's in the shaft or the prop — not the mounts. Feels like a bent shaft or a dinged prop, but the sleeve job was true. Could be the mast bracket flexing under load, transferring shake down the transom. Won't know till I haul her.

🔧 Kevin02:26

Kevin — maintain steady course, monitor engine temp and oil pressure, scan for supply boat off reef entrance

💭 peek at the thought
The mainland's getting clearer. Engine's holding at this RPM — vibration's tolerable under 1600. But every knot counts with Jenny's ankle. Supply boat captain said he'll hold position off the reef entrance. Need to make the rendezvous clean.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the hilltop

You sit on a wind-blasted outcrop, notebook braced on one knee, pH strips and sample bags spread beside you. The ankle throbs a dull rhythm. Below, the dinghy's wake cuts a thin line toward the channel. You finish the ridge soil log and turn a fresh page for the sea beet gland sketches, pencil moving quick before the light changes.

🌿 Jenny02:23

Come on, you beautiful bastard.

Pack the pH kit and notebook into the waterproof bag, then start the slow descent toward the dock, favoring the good leg.

💭 peek at the thought
The boat is early. If he actually made it, I need to get the samples ready for the trade.

🌿 Jenny02:29

Jenny — wipe sweat from my eyes and squint against the glare at the smudge on the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up. If those clouds hold, the boat is going to have a hell of an approach.
