← Day 697

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the hilltop

Greenheart sister bolt-up and ridge survey continuation

Kevin at the dock driving the final through-bolts on the starboard stringer scarf joint as the tide rises; Jenny on the north ridge completing the Carex transect and testing the inland spring pH.

The afternoon heat is oppressive as the tide reaches its peak, pushing the swell against the newly reinforced dock. The greenheart sister plank is now holding the primary load of the starboard stringer, compensating for the failure in the north piling.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand knee-deep in rising water, the greenheart sister plank bolted at two points, the third hole drilled. The 150mm stainless through-bolt slides home. You torque the nyloc nut to 35Nm, the wrench singing on the stainless. The joint is solid, zero movement. You sight down the stringer — true.

🔧 Kevin03:47

Kevin — drill the final staggered through-bolt hole in the greenheart sister plank, drive the last 150mm stainless through-bolt with washer and nyloc nut, torque to 35Nm, wipe salt off the wrench, and walk back up the dock to drier ground

💭 peek at the thought
One bolt left to drive, then the starboard stringer's done. Tide's coming up fast — water's already licking the lower planks. Need to get the last through-bolt home and torque it before the joint submerges. Good greenheart, good bolts, good work. Jenny'll see it at low water tomorrow.

🔧 Kevin03:50

Kevin — walk up from the dock to the cottage, wash hands at the rain barrel, pull out the first aid kit and antibiotics, set a clean gauze pad and the metronidazole blister pack on the porch table ready for when Jenny returns

💭 peek at the thought
Dock's holding. Stringer's sistered proper with greenheart, three through-bolts torqued to spec. Tide's covered the work now — won't see it again until tomorrow's low water. Back on solid ground. Hands are salt-gritty. Stomach's reminding me it's past midday. Jenny's up on the ridge with her notebook and that ankle. Should check the dressing before she comes down, see if the red line's held or crept.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the hilltop

You crouch at the last quadrat of the Carex transect, pencil moving over the waterproof notebook page. The species count is complete: Carex divisa dominant, two associates. You cap the pen, stretch the stiff ankle, and look down the ridge toward the spring. The pH strip (6.2) is taped in the log beside the sketch. The grandmother's seed tin sits in your pack, seal unbroken.

🌿 Jenny03:49

Not today, you stubborn things.

Pack the notebook and test kit into the bag; begin the slow descent back to the cottage, favoring the right leg.

💭 peek at the thought
The pH is too high for the heirloom variety; I need to find the acidic pockets near the leeward side of the spring.

🌿 Jenny03:53

Jenny — wipe sweat from my brow with the back of a hand; stop to check the barometer on the cottage wall.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping; that grey smudge on the horizon is moving faster than the forecast.
