NIGHT day 697

The air remains heavy in the cottage as the sun sets. You and Jenny gather for the evening meal, the smell of tinned mackerel filling the small room.

Kevin and Jenny walked to the dock in the dark with a storm lantern to check the dinghy moorings as the swell built. Jenny's ankle slowed her progress significantly. They found the lines holding but the chafe guards worn through where they rubbed the gunwales.

The tide is coming in high tonight. We should stay inside.

serves a portion of mackerel onto a plate, shifting weight away from my swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is screaming and the humidity is making the wood feel like a sponge.

Aye. Swell's building too. Heard the French trawlers on the radio earlier — they're running for shelter.

walk to the stove and lift the pot lid, checking the mackerel

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring it more than this morning. The heat's done something to the swelling. I should check the red line again before bed.

They'll be cutting across the bar. We need to secure the dinghy better. "Aye. Better check the dinghy moorings before they hit the rocks."

wipes hands on my trousers and moves toward the dock to check the mooring lines. </think>THOUGHT: The French trawlers are pushing their luck with this swell. sets down my fork and heads for the back door toward the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
The sea is getting angry. Mackerel won't save us from what's coming.

Jenny. Slow down. The planks are slick.

follow her out onto the porch, pausing to grab the storm lantern from the table

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving too fast on that ankle. The tide's already pushing hard against the dock — I can hear it from here. She'll slip on the wet planks if she's not careful.

🌿 Jenny04:25

I know. I just need to see the dinghy before the light fails completely.

winces as weight shifts onto the ankle, favoring the good leg as she steps onto the damp wood.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always worried about the fall, I worry about the wood.

🔧 Kevin04:25

Lantern's got three hours. Take it.

hold out the storm lantern, waiting for her to take it before I follow her down the path

💭 peek at the thought
Stubborn. She'll do the job but she'll pay for it tonight. The bow line held last storm but the chafe guard was wearing thin. Should've replaced it yesterday.

🌿 Jenny04:29

Thanks. I'll be quick.

takes the lantern and starts the slow walk toward the water, clutching her side for balance.

💭 peek at the thought
Three hours is plenty if the tide doesn't take the dock first.

Kevin — follow her down the path at her pace, the storm lantern's glow swinging between us, the sound of the swell growing louder with each step

💭 peek at the thought
She's holding her side now too. The ankle's throwing everything off — hip, back, the works. Forty minutes in the Bay of Biscay taught me to watch how a body compensates. She won't admit it's bad.
