Waiting for the tide

The midday heat peaks, and the silence of the island is broken only by the occasional drone of insects.

Kevin and Jenny checked the heirloom seed tin on the porch as the tide receded. Kevin inspected the seeds for moisture or mold while Jenny debrided her swelling ankle with saline. They confirmed the ridge remains stable for now, though the cottage shutter continues to leak.

🌿 Jenny05:05

Jenny — open the heirloom seed tin to inspect the contents for any sign of moisture or mold.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in six days, I'll have to start rationing the water, and I can't risk the seeds on that.

🔧 Kevin05:05

Tin's been sealed since the crate. Desiccant packet was fresh when we packed it.

Walk to the porch steps and lean against the post, watching the tide line recede.

💭 peek at the thought
She's checking the seed tin again. Third time today. The heat's not helping — condensation builds fast in metal. If there's moisture in there, the desiccant's spent and we need dry newspaper and shade, not another inspection.

🌿 Jenny05:07

The desiccant can only do so much if the seal is compromised.

Carefully lift the lid of the tin and check the heirloom seeds for clumping or dampness.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too optimistic; the humidity here is a slow killer for even the best seals.

🔧 Kevin05:07

The rim's clean. No rust bloom on the threads.

Pull the pocket knife from my belt, flip it open, and scrape a thumbnail along the tin's sealing edge to show her the metal's still sound.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the seal. Rust eats through the rim threads slow, then all at once. But hovering won't fix it.

🌿 Jenny05:09

It's not just the air, it's the pH.

Rub a handful of the seeds between my fingers to Ensure they are dry and viable.

💭 peek at the thought
If the threads are clean, maybe the seeds have a chance, but I still need the right soil.

🔧 Kevin05:09

They're not in the soil, Jen. They're in the tin.

Crouch beside her on the porch boards, close enough to see what she's holding — tomato, pepper, the grandmother beans — and let the silence stretch while she works.

💭 peek at the thought
pH. Right. She's thinking of the north slope readings — 5.5, 5.8. Acid soil eats seed coats if they sit in it. But these are in the tin, not the ground. She's borrowing trouble from tomorrow.

🌿 Jenny05:11

I know. But if the ridge isn't stable, everything washes own.

Put the seeds back into the tin and press the lid shut with a sharp click.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't understand that the tin is just a delay; the soil is the real battle.

🔧 Kevin05:11

The intercept trench is holding. North piling sister brace is solid. We bought time.

Stand up, wipe dust from my knees, and glance at the barometer on the kitchen shelf through the open door — 1014 and rising.

💭 peek at the thought
Ridge stability. She's been over every meter of that north slope with the auger and the notebook. If she says it's not stable, it's not stable. The scarf joint on the dock held — greenheart, epoxy, stainless through-bolts — but the hillside's a different beast. Clay over silt, iron bands at depth, and the water table rising with every swell.

🌿 Jenny05:13

way enough time if the soil shifts.

Trace the edge of the seed tin and look out toward the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
Time is the one thing I don't have enough of, and the island keeps eating it.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:13

The soil auger hit bedrock at forty centimeters on the last transect. Blue clay, laminated. It's not moving.

Walk to the porch rail, brace my forearms on the weathered wood, and follow her gaze up the slope toward the ridge line where the cairns mark the Carex plots.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the dock. She's talking about the garden — the heirloom rows, the sea beet transects, the tomato stakes we drove in last week. If the north slope lets go, it takes the garden with it. And the seed tin. And us.
