Crate and static

Kevin and Jenny stand on the dock in the grey dawn, the waterlogged crate wedged between a piling and the new planking. The shortwave on the porch crackles to life — a man's voice, faint and fragmented, calling a position report on Tom's frequency before dissolving into hiss. The tide slaps the boards below them, high and still rising, and the barometer needle has slipped another two millibars since first light.

The waterlogged crate sits heavy on the porch boards, smelling of salt and damp wood. The tide is still high, licking at the bottom of the new dock planks, as the air grows thick with the humidity of the coming pressure front.

Grab the other end. We move it up past the high-water mark before the tide turns the dock to ice.

crouch and get a solid grip on the crate's lower edge, waiting for Jenny to take the other side

💭 peek at the thought
That voice on Tom's frequency. Could be nothing. Could be everything. My hands know what to do with this crate while my head sorts the rest.

On it.

Run to the crate, grip the upper edge with both hands, and heave it upward alongside Kevin while yelling coordinates to the radio operator.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's dropping faster than I calculated - we need to move this crate before the swell catches us. That radio transmission was just static and fragments, but it's the supply boat checking in. Good. Now I need to lift this waterlogged beast and get it above the high-water line before the tide shifts. Kevin's strong and knows his weight, but I can't afford to hesitate here.

Quiet. Lift on three. One — two — three.

drive with the legs, back straight, walking the heavy crate backward up the dock toward the cottage porch, boots finding purchase on the new planking

💭 peek at the thought
She's strong. Stronger than she knows. The radio can wait — the crate won't.

🌿 Jenny23:15

Got it. Got it.

Match Kevin's lifting motion, keeping pace as he walks backward with the crate, positioning myself on his other side to balance the weight and prevent it from swinging into the water. </think>THOUGHT: His grip is solid, the way he moves hea

💭 peek at the thought
His grip is solid, the way he moves heavy things without strain. The crate's weight is shifting - we're making progress up the dock. I follow his lead, matching his rhythm, feeling the crate's position change with each step. The radio crackles somewhere in the cottage, but for now the work speaks louder than words.

Porch. Through the door. Watch the jamb.

shift weight to the inside foot, pivot the crate clear of the doorframe, and set it down hard on the porch boards, chest heaving

💭 peek at the thought
His grip is solid, the way he moves heavy things — no wasted motion. The crate's centre of gravity wants to swing starboard. I adjust.

🌿 Jenny23:21

Safe and sound.

Wipe sweat from my brow with my forearm and look back at the dock, checking the rot in the planks.

💭 peek at the thought
That thing weighs like an anchor. My arms are shaking, but it's inside before the tide takes the dock.
