← Day 70

Apart — Kevin at the keeper's cottage, Jenny at the tide pools

The Approaching Front

Kevin is at the cottage; Jenny is at the tide pools.

Kevin ran the Yanmar under generator load and it held steady, confirming the sleeve repair. Jenny completed her tide pool sketches and marked reference points for the north ridge Carex transect, then headed back as the tide began to turn.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the keeper's cottage

You move the damp seed packets inside to the stove to dry before the rain hits.

🔧 Kevin23:47

Kevin — gather the damp heirloom seed packets from the porch and carry them inside, spreading them on paper towels near the wood stove to dry.

💭 peek at the thought
The air's gone thick. Pressure's dropping faster than the barometer shows. Get the seeds dry and under cover before the sky opens.

🔧 Kevin23:53

Kevin — walk to the Yanmar, check oil and fuel levels, then connect the generator leads. Crank the engine and bring it up to running temperature before applying load.

💭 peek at the thought
Seeds are drying. Stove's throwing decent heat. Now the Yanmar needs its load test before the weather turns proper. Generator's right there, cable's ready. Nothing else to it.

🔧 Kevin23:58

Kevin — let the Yanmar idle at operating temperature for five minutes, watching oil pressure and listening for irregularities, then engage the generator load gradually.

💭 peek at the thought
Engine caught first crank. Oil pressure solid. Let her warm through proper before loading the generator. The exhaust note's clean — no smoke, no miss. Compression hold on cylinder two is doing its job.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the tide pools

You watch the receding water, looking for any last treasures before the tide turns back.

🌿 Jenny23:45

Easy there, you little thief.

Squats low by the rock shelf to pry a stubborn limet from a crevice with a matching knife.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pressure keeps dropping like this, I need to make sure the Yanmar is fully sealed down before the storm hits.

🌿 Jenny23:51

Jenny — stands up and wipes salt water from her palms, then starts back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is already touching the lower shelf again; I need to get back before I'm stranded.

🌿 Jenny23:56

Kevin mentioned the north ridge Carex transect tomorrow. I should mark some reference points today while the light holds.

Makes a sketch of the tide pool topography in the notebook, noting the locations of distinctive rock formations and plant clusters.

💭 peek at the thought
The yanarmarmar sleeve inspection took longer than expected, and now the barometer is at 1003 hPa with clouds building.
