Morning Radio and Tide Check
Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch as the trade wind picks up. Jenny monitors her ankle in the basin of salt water while Kevin checks the falling barometer and prepares the shortwave radio.
Kevin returns to the dock in the dinghy, the Yanmar engine sputtering as he battles the rising chop. He confirms the copper fuel line is cracked near the transom, noting that it will need a full replacement. Back at the cottage, Jenny sits against the stone wall, wincing through the pain as she prepares the scalpel to debride the swollen, infected ankle, watching the tide come in rapidly.
The wind is shifting. Check the pilings on the north.
Lean back against the stone wall, wincing as the water hits the wound, and begins a quick, jagged sketch of the sea much venation in the notebook.

North pilings at low water. I'll take the skiff.
check barometer reading and note time, then walk to the dock to inspect the Yanmar mounting bolts and fuel line before launching the dinghy

Watch the fuel line. It's leaking near the transom.
Tighten the bandage over the salt water, biting my lip to stifle the throbbing in my ankle, and watch the skiff disappear into the grey horizon.

Got it. Copper's cracked at the bend. I'll swap the section when I'm back.
push off from the dock in the dinghy, throttle low, and motor toward the north pilings against the building chop

Don't stay out too long. The tide is coming in faster than the forecast.
Reach for the scalpel on the table, fingers shaking slightly, as I prepare to debride the swollen edge of the infection.

Hour. Maybe less.
approach the north pilings at an angle against the swell, kill the engine, and drift in to check the sister brace and shim alignment at the waterline

Focus on the brace. Don't let the current take you.
Press the sterilized blade to the skin, breathing through gritted teeth as I make the first cut to release the pressure.

Brace holds. Stringer checking at the scarf — hairline. Mark it for epoxy at next low.
restart the Yanmar, come about hard to port, and run for the channel before the ebb sets against the wind
