The calm before the storm

The first drops of rain fall as the sun sets, the wind begins to rattle the cottage shutters.

Kevin secured the generator shed tarp and checked the dinghy mooring lines while Jenny debrided her infected ankle and prepared the radio log. The barometer continued rising to 1014 hPa as the storm threat diminished.

🔧 Kevin20:52

Kevin — walk to the generator shed and secure the storm tarp with the ratchet straps, then check the dinghy mooring lines at the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's coming in faster than the barometer warned. Need to get the generator tarp battened down and check the dinghy lines before dark makes it harder.

🌿 Jenny20:53

Kevin? Check the final latch in the kitchen, it's catching!

Sit up with a wince, reaching for the cold pack on the nightstand and pressing it against the swollen skin.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is coming early; the own lied again. My ankle feels like it's on fire.

🔧 Kevin20:54

On it.

Walk to the kitchen and force the stubborn latch home with the heel of my hand, checking the seal.

💭 peek at the thought
Kitchen shutter latch has been sticking since the last swell. She's right to catch it — if that blows open, we lose the stove draft and the radio shelf takes water.

🌿 Jenny20:55

Don't forget the north window, the wind is already howling.

Pull back the blanket and inspect the red line around the ankle, watching for the pulse of the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the kitchen held. If the water gets in, I have to move the seeds to the high shelf.

🔧 Kevin20:56

Got the batten by the door.

Grab the timber strip leaning beside the porch door and wedge it across the north window frame, driving the wedge tight with the mallet.

💭 peek at the thought
North window's the one the coconut crab got to last month — frame's warped. If the wind's already hitting it, the latch won't hold without the timber batten.

🌿 Jenny20:57

Keep the radio on, I want to hear the static again.

Reach for the herbarium notebook and the pencil, sketching the pattern of the rain against the stone wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's fast, but the pressure is dropping too quickly. I need to check the log before the storm really breaks.

🔧 Kevin20:58

Already on. 2182, squelch open.

Turn the volume knob up two notches on the shortwave, letting the white noise fill the kitchen, then step back to the porch to watch the treeline bend.

💭 peek at the thought
She likes the static — says it sounds like the ocean breathing. Radio's been crackling all afternoon on 2182. Leave it on the working frequency, volume low.

🌿 Jenny20:59

Stay back from the edge, Kevin! The glass will blow!

Lean back against the stove, clutching my ankle and shifting my weight away from the throbbing heat.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is screaming through the gaps. If the roof goes, the grandmother's seeds are lost.
