← Day 710

the keeper's cottage · day 710 · afternoon

midday check-in at the cottage

Kevin arrives at the cottage from the garden gate as Jenny comes up the path from the ridge. Both hungry. The kettle sits on the stove cold. The barometer on the porch reads 1023 hPa steady. Cloud cover thickening overhead.

Kevin inspected the north corner of the fence and marked the two remaining posts for replacement. Jenny completed the first garden test pit, noting the high water table and acidic soil. The afternoon heat remains heavy and still as the supply boat approaches.

The ridge is stable, but the drainage at the shrine is worse than I thought.

Jenny wipes grit from her hands on her trousers and steps into the kitchen, glancing at the cold stove.

💭 peek at the thought
The boat is in four days, but the air feels like it's going to break now.

Fence line's done. Corner post set. Two more marked north — one punk at the base, one gone clean. Wire's slack the whole run.

walk to the stove and lay a handful of kindling in the firebox, striking a match to light it

💭 peek at the thought
She's tired. The ankle's holding but the day wore on her. Kettle's cold means neither of us lit the stove since breakfast. Cloud's building fast for a steady barometer — something's coming in high.

🌿 Jenny01:20

Good work. I mapped the shrine pit — clay at 35, water seep at 45, sheetin' down toward the garden.

Jenny hangs her pack on a hook by the door and heads to the stove, watching Kevin's flame catch. </think>SAY: I sketched the drainage gradient.

💭 peek at the thought
The north posts will need greenheart — salt eatin' through anything else.

Matches the garden pit. Clay at 35, water at 45, pH 5.8. Sheet flow's pushing salt downhill into the tomato row.

add a split of dry spruce to the kindling, then a thicker round, feeding the fire slow

💭 peek at the thought
She did the sketch while I was driving posts. Thorough. The sheeting water explains the salt creeping into the lower beds. We'll need a cut-off trench or the lime we laid washes out.

🌿 Jenny01:23

We'll need to check the lime beds again tomorrow. The pH is already dropping.

Jenny reaches into the pantry to pull out the bag of rice, her stomach giving a low growl.

💭 peek at the thought
If the salt keeps moving like that, grandmother's seeds won't stand a chance.

Corned beef tin in the crate. Fat renders good for the rice. I'll fry it.

take the cast iron skillet from the shelf and set it on the stove top, letting it heat while pulling the tin of corned beef from the recovered crate

💭 peek at the thought
She's hungry and the ankle's stiffening up standing there. Rice and corned beef fat'll warm her through. The lime beds holding at 6.8 to 7.0 last check, but if the sheet flow's active, the untreated ground'll drag it down fast.

🌿 Jenny01:27

I'll get the water started. We need to save the fuel if the boat's late.

Jenny measures out two cups of rice, her movements slow and tired.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm hungry enough to eat the notebook pages.

🔧 Kevin01:27

Wood's stacked dry. Tank's full. Diesel's for the boat and generator only.

open the corned beef tin with the can opener, scraping the thick fat into the hot skillet where it sizzles and spreads, then tip the meat in after to crisp

💭 peek at the thought
Boat's due in four days. Fuel's thirty litres in the drum — generator and Yanmar both. She's right to save it. Wood's plenty. The rain tank's near full at 394. We burn wood for cooking, save diesel for the engine.
