Morning Prep

They meet at the cottage porch to discuss the fence damage and the seed tin inventory as the tide continues to rise toward the dock.

Kevin spent the morning at the dock clearing the area around the mooring ring and preparing the materials for the fence repair. Jenny focused on the old shrine area, documenting the soil erosion near the terrace and checking the health of the heirloom garden's perimeter plants.

🌿 Jenny00:37

The north fence is leaning into the salt. I'm putting four cedar posts on the list for the boat.

Sketches the leaning post in the notebook, noting the rot line at the base.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't bring the cedar, I'll have to use the driftwood from the north beach, but it won't last as long. I need to check the seeds before the rain starts.

Posts rot where the wire bites. Check the strainers and the deadmen first. If they're gone, four posts just lean faster.

walk to the garden gate and follow the fence line north, scanning the wire tension and post bases

💭 peek at the thought
Four posts won't hold if the rot's already in the rail. Need to check the strainers and the deadmen before we order. She's listing materials, not fixing the problem.

🌿 Jenny00:39

I'll check the deadmen by the shrine. If they've shifted, I'll have to dig deeper.

Walk to the edge of the walled garden, poking the soil with the tip of the garden fork.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, as usual. I'm looking at the wood, he's looking at the tension holding it all together.

🔧 Kevin00:39

I'll walk the seaward section. Meet you at the corner post.

follow the fence line north along the cliff edge, testing each post base with a boot and eyeing the wire tension

💭 peek at the thought
She's checking the shrine end. That's the anchor point. If the deadman there's pulled, the whole line's slack. I'll take the seaward stretch where the storm hit hardest.

🌿 Jenny00:43

Don't pull too hard on the wire, it looks brittle.

Walk toward the shrine, clearing weeds away from the old test pit.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always heading for the seaward side where the wind hits hardest. I need to focus on the soil before the salt gets any worse.

🔧 Kevin00:43

Flat hand only. Just feeling for give.

continue north along the fence, pressing the wire gently with an open palm at each post, marking the bad ones with a scratch of the knife on the wood

💭 peek at the thought
Wire's been salt-blasted for years. She's right — one hard tug and it parts. I'll test with the flat of my hand, not the grip.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:45

I'm checking the drainage here. If the water table is up, the lime beds will just sour.

Kneel by the test pit, digging the spade into the earth to check the clay layer.

💭 peek at the thought
If that wire is snapping, the whole section will come down in the next gale. I need to see if the soil is even holding there.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:45

Three posts bad so far. One strainer loose. Corner post holds but the deadman's exposed.

reach the corner post where the fence turns inland, crouch to scrape soil back from the deadman anchor, checking how much wire's buried and whether the log's rotted through

💭 peek at the thought
She's testing the garden drainage while I'm on the fence. Smart. The two problems connect — water pushes the posts, salt kills the beds. I'll finish the line and meet her at the corner with the count.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:49

If it's exposed, we'll have to re-anchor it deeper. The soil here is too loose anyway.

Sketch the exposed deadman in the notebook, noting the depth of the rot and the angle of the wire.

💭 peek at the thought
Exposed? That's not good. The salt is eating the wood. If the deadman gives, the whole north ridge section goes with it.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:50

Log's done. Wire's cut a groove. Need to bury a new one deeper, back of the corner. You got the spade — I'll fetch the pick and a greenheart offcut from the dock pile.

walk back toward the cottage and dock, moving fast across the garden path

💭 peek at the thought
Deadman's a spruce log, half-eaten. Wire's sawed a groove in it. Re-anchoring means digging behind the corner post — hard clay, tight against the wall. Need a pick and time. She's already got the spade.
