Waiting for the Tide

The heavy evening air sits still as the sun begins to dip. You and Jenny prepare a simple meal together, watching the barometer drop slightly further.

Kevin struggled to pry the loose shutter board in the driving rain, failing to secure it properly despite his effort. Jenny managed to limp to the garden and successfully secure the heavy tarp with two stakes, despite the sharp pain in her swollen ankle.

🌿 Jenny03:35

Jenny, the barometer's dropping. We should secure the tarp before the rain gets worse.

walk to the cottage door and check the weather window, then head to the garden to assess the tarp situation.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's dropping again—another storm rolling in, and I'm still here with this damn ankle.

Aye. I'll grab the batten strips and the mallet. You check the corner by the rosemary — that stake was loose.

Walk to the tool shed, collect two timber strips, the mallet, and a coil of heavy twine.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's down from 1015 to something lower. She's right — the tarp's been flapping in the gusts all afternoon. One corner pulled a stake yesterday. If we don't batten it proper, the tomatoes get shredded and we lose the shade cloth anchors again.

Take the mallet from the porch step. I'll meet you there with the battens.

Walk toward the garden with timber strips and twine, stepping over the fallen spruce branches across the path.

💭 peek at the thought
The rosemary's in the southeast corner, near where I tested the soil pH last week—already waterlogged from the spring runoff. If that stake's gone, the whole row's vulnerable. She'll need the mallet too.

🌿 Jenny03:43

I'll grab the mallet—good thing I noticed the step was loose too, might as well fix both.

limp to the porch step, pry the mallet from beneath it, then head toward Kevin by the garden path.

💭 peek at the thought
The porch step is right there by the kitchen door, but my ankle's already screaming from the walk across the cottage floor.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🔧 Kevin03:43

Don't pry with the boot. Kick it free or I'll do it.

Reach the rosemary row, drive the first timber strip into the wet soil beside the leaning stake, and start wrapping twine around both.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left leg still. The poultice held the swelling down but the tendon's stiff. She shouldn't be prying things up with her foot. I'll fix the step proper tomorrow—through-bolt it like the dock.

🌿 Jenny03:49

I'm kicking it, Kevin. way give me a second.

kick the mallet free from under the porch step, grab the handle, and limp toward the garden to help with the stake.

💭 peek at the thought
way's always so impatient with the tools, and my ankle is throbbing with every step.

🔧 Kevin03:49

Stake's pulled. Gotta reset it. Hold the timber while I drive it.

Pass her the second timber strip, grip the mallet, and drive a new stake eighteen inches in beside the old one, using the first timber as a guide.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's moving. The rosemary stake's canted thirty degrees—root ball's half out the ground from the saturation. We'll need to reset it deeper and guy it three ways.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:51

I've got it. Make sure it doesn't shift when you hit it.

crouch in the mud, pressing the timber strip against the new stake while wincing as the pain spikes in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't hold this steady, the whole row will just lean again when the wind hits.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:51

Breath out. Steady.

Swing the mallet in controlled strikes, letting the head's weight seat the stake without jarring the timber she's holding.

💭 peek at the thought
She's white at the jaw. The antibiotic's working but the tendon's still knitting. She shouldn't be crouching in cold mud. I'll drive it softer—let the weight do the work.
