Approaching Rain

The first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof as the wind begins to whistle through the eaves.

Kevin checked the water levels and secured the cottage shutters against the coming storm as the pressure dropped. Jenny drifted into a feverish sleep under the blanket while Kevin applied a fresh sea beet poultice to her infected ankle.

🌿 Jenny11:55

Kevin... check the rain tank, please.

pull the thin blanket up over my chest and wince as the movement shifts my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is finally coming, but I'm too weak to even reach the water.

🔧 Kevin11:55

Right. Back in a minute.

Walk to the back wall of the cottage and check the rain tank level, then head to the generator shed to verify the storm lashings are tight.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's here. Tank'll top off fast. She's cold and the ankle's throbbing. I'll check the gauge and get the generator covered before the downpour hits proper.

🌿 Jenny12:07

Don't be long

close my eyes and listen to the rain drumming on the metal, trying to ignore the heat radiating from my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
If the generator fails in this storm, I'm in the dark with a fever.

🔧 Kevin12:07

Tank's full. Overflow running clean. Generator's lashed down tight.

Walk back to the porch and crouch beside Jenny, pressing the back of my hand to her forehead to check the fever.

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's at 400. Full. Overflow's running clean through the copper spillway. Generator shed's battened down, ratchet straps holding. Good. Back to her.

🌿 Jenny12:11

I'm fine... I just need to sleep it off. ownDO: turn away from his touch slightly, fighting a wave of nausea.

💭 peek at the thought
His hand is so cold against my skin. I'm burning up.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:11

Sleep. I'll wake you for the next dose.

Pull the blanket up to her shoulders, set the tin mug of broth within reach on the porch floor, and sit on the edge of the porch with the radio, turning the volume low to monitor 16 MHz while she rests.

💭 peek at the thought
She's burning. Nausea on top of the fever means the infection's still moving. Antibiotics are four days in — should be biting by now. Might need to debride again tonight if the poultice hasn't drawn enough. Let her rest first.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:15

Okay

let my breathing slow as the sound of the rain finally drowns out the throbbing in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If I sleep now, will I wake up before the boat comes? The seeds are still in the tin.

🔧 Kevin12:15

Kevin — stand, pull the porch door mostly shut against the driving rain, and walk down the garden path toward the dock, hood up, flashlight beam cutting the grey.

💭 peek at the thought
She's out. Radio's quiet on 16. Barometer's still falling — 983 now. Wind's shifting northeast, rising. This'll blow through midnight at least. Need to check the dock lines and the dinghy anchor warp before full dark. And the garden tarp corners — coconut crab shredded the anchors last week.

🌿 Jenny12:17

(whispering) wait...

curl into a ball, the smell of salt and damp wood filling the room as the fever finally takes me.

💭 peek at the thought
The island is just the sound of the water and the heat in my blood.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:17

Kevin — walk fast down the slick grass to the dock, flashlight sweeping the dinghy first — check the bow line, the storm anchor warp, the stern springs — then the mooring ring and piling lashings.

flagged: repeated_opener

💭 peek at the thought
She's asleep. The whisper wasn't for me. Wind's gusting 30 knots steady, higher in the squalls. Dock lines will be singing. Dinghy's on a single bow line and the storm anchor — if that drags, she's gone. Move.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:19

(a low, pained groan)

shiver under the blanket as I drift into a deep, feverish sleep.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up; I hope the dinghy holds in the surge.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:19

Kevin — jog back up the path to the garden, grab the spare cedar stake and mallet from the shed, and drive a new anchor point for the tarp corner, battening it down with a timber strip.

flagged: repeated_opener

💭 peek at the thought
Dinghy's holding — bow line tight, storm anchor dug in, both stern springs solid. Mooring ring's fast, oak wedges biting. South piling sister brace is tight. Good. But the garden tarp's northeast corner is flapping — crab-chewed stake gave way. If that tears loose in a gust, it takes the shade cloth and the tomato stakes with it. Need to re-stake it now before the next squall.
