← Day 720

the old shrine · day 720 · evening

The storm breaks

The first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof as the wind picks up, rattling the shutters of the cottage.

The warm rain continues to drum against the roof of the old shrine, blurring the line between the sea and sky. The tide is high, lapping hungrily at the lower rocks while the air pressure plummets. Jenny lies on the stone bench, her breathing shallow and ragged as the infection in her ankle throbs in time with the falling barometer.

🌿 Jenny20:36

The pressure is dropping faster than the forecast said.

Lean back against the stone wall and close eyes against the spray.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is going to split open if this rain doesn't stop throbbing.

Aye. Dropping steady. Gonna secure the garden anchors first, then the dinghy.

walk toward the garden to check and tighten the shade cloth anchor points

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's falling faster than I like. She's right. Need to get the shade cloth anchors sorted before the wind tears them loose, then check the dinghy lines.

🌿 Jenny20:38

Watch the stakes, the soil is already turning to mush.

Watch him disappear into the rain, clutching my throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind takes the dinghy, we're stranded without the boat.

🔧 Kevin20:38

Kevin — reach the garden and inspect the shade cloth anchors, testing each stake for movement in the softened soil

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Ground's already soft from the last rain. Crab didn't help. Need to drive the stakes deeper or find something heavier to back them.

🌿 Jenny20:40

Be careful with the north ridge side, the earth is sliding!

Tighten the bandage on my ankle, wincing at the flare of pain.

💭 peek at the thought
If those anchors pull, the whole crop is lost to the mud.

🔧 Kevin20:41

Seen it. Got oak stakes in the shed. Gonna drive them deep.

head back toward the cottage shed to retrieve the oak stakes and a mallet

💭 peek at the thought
North ridge side's the worst. Saw the crab's work there yesterday — chewed through one wire, loosened two stakes. Soil's sliding now with this rain. Need to drive new stakes deeper, maybe use the oak offcuts from the dock repair.

🌿 Jenny20:42

Bring the heavy mallet, it's not going to go easy.

Lean against the cold stone, watching the rain blur the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
I hope those stakes are long enough; the ground is like soup today.

🔧 Kevin20:42

Kevin — grab the sled hammer from the hook by the garden gate and head for the north ridge stakes

💭 peek at the thought
Heavy mallet's in the workshop, not the shed. But the sled hammer's hanging by the garden gate — that'll drive oak into wet clay.
