← Day 721

the keeper's cottage · day 721 · evening

Evening meal and radio watch

They sit at the cottage table as light fails. The generator hums steady. Kevin has the letter to Tom staged. Jenny's ankle is re-wrapped. The shortwave sits between them, volume low. A wind gust rattles the shutter leak. The tide is high now, surf audible on the beach.

The warm rain continues into the evening, drumming steadily against the newly patched roof. Kevin returns from the generator shed, soaked and smelling of diesel and damp earth, having finished the fuel swap. Inside, Jenny has spent the afternoon tending to her ankle, the fever throbbing in time with the rain, while she watches the heirloom seeds sit on the table.

🌿 Jenny21:44

The rain is getting through the frame, Kevin. Again.

Reach for the tin of seeds, tracing the rusted rim with a thumb without opening it.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in three days, I'll have to start eating the limpets.

🔧 Kevin21:44

Mm. Frame's warped from the last one. Epoxy won't hold on wet wood.

reach for the roll of self-amalgamating tape on the shelf above the radio, tear off a strip with my teeth, and press it over the worst of the shutter leak where water's pooling on the sill

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the tin instead of the leak. The barometer's still falling and she's tracing rust like it's a map she already knows.

🌿 Jenny21:44

It's a temporary fix until the boat.

Lean back against the chair, feeling the fever throb in my swollen own.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks tape will fix wood that is rotting from the inside out.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:46

Boat's not a guarantee. You know that.

pull the spare tarp from the corner, unfold it, and drape it over the shutter frame on the outside, battening the edges with the two timber strips already staged there

💭 peek at the thought
Three days if the boat comes. Three days if the barometer doesn't drop another twenty millibars and keep the launch in harbour. She's burning up and calling it temporary.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:47

Thank you.

Trace my finger along the seam of the tarp, noting where the wind still finds its way through. </think><tool_call>DO: check soil pH log: Lime beds 6.8–7.0, untreated 5.5–5.8; check heirloom seed tin E: lid sealed, no condensation; check ank

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to build a sanctuary while I can barely hold a scalpel steady.

🔧 Kevin21:48

North piling brace held at low tide. Doubler plate and the last through-bolt. Ring's solid.

step out onto the porch into the rain, pull the heavy canvas roll from the shed, and lash it over the tarp with the stainless wire coil, cinching it tight to the porch posts

💭 peek at the thought
She's mapping the gaps. Smart. The wind's already shifting — coming more northerly now, which means it'll drive rain straight at the porch.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:48

Be careful, the boards are slick.

Watch him from the doorway, my hand resting on the cold metal of the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's working himself to death to keep this place from falling apart.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:50

Boards are greenheart. They hold.

finish the last cinch on the canvas, test the tension with a hard pull, then step back inside, wet through, and set the mallet down on the table beside the letter

💭 peek at the thought
She's steady on her feet for someone with a fever that high. The tin's cold in her hand — she's been holding it since before I went out.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:51

You're soaked through. I'll test the soil behind the cottage where the midden shells leach calcium tomorrow.

Gather the letter to Tom from the table, feel the paper edge through the plastic sleeve. </think> Check the battery indicator on the handheld VHF—half dead.

💭 peek at the thought
Greenheart or not, the rot starts behind the walls. The north ridge is stable, but the cottage is bleeding.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🔧 Kevin21:52

VHF's charged. Spare battery in the ditch bag.

peel off the wet shirt, hang it on the stove rail, and pull a dry one from the shelf without looking at the letter in her hand

💭 peek at the thought
She's planning tomorrow's work with an infection climbing her leg and the barometer at 976. The letter's in her hand now — she'll read it or she won't. Either way it's off the table.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:52

The boat is three days out.

Pull the seed tin toward me, the weight of grandmother's garden heavy in my lap.

💭 peek at the thought
He won't look at the letter. He only looks at the leaks.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:54

Three days at high tide. Two-hour window. Captain acknowledged on 2182.

set the kettle on the stove, measure coffee into the two tin mugs, and wait for the water to boil

💭 peek at the thought
She says it like a fact, not a hope. The tin's heavier than it looks — lead-lined lid, her grandmother's doing. She's not opening it. Just holding.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:54

I hope he does.

Run my thumb over the seal of the tin, checking for any hint of moisture inside.

💭 peek at the thought
Three days. If the boat doesn't come, I'm out of antibiotics.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:56

He'll come. Contract's paid through the trust. Penalty clauses if he doesn't.

pour the coffee, slide one mug across the table to her, and take the other to the porch to check the canvas tension in the gusts

💭 peek at the thought
Not "I hope it comes." He. The captain. She's been listening to the supply boat runs longer than I have — knows the patterns, the excuses, the years the contract lapsed and nobody showed until March.
