Evening Prep Before the Tide

Kevin and Jenny gather in the cottage as the light begins to fade, reviewing the list for tomorrow and monitoring the shifting weather patterns.

Kevin pre-drilled bolt holes in the greenheart sister plates for the ridge beam repair and staged them under the eaves. Jenny inspected the water tank, finding it full at 400 litres, then checked the ridge beam under the tarp — no new rot, but the lead flashing has lifted at one corner. She moved the grandmother's seed tin to the stove's drying shelf to halt further corrosion.

🌿 Jenny23:40

Jenny — trace the edge of the seed tin with my thumb, feeling the throb in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, I'll run out of antibiotic ointment, and I'm still stuck with these weeds and this rotting beam. ownSAY: Check the radio one last time. I need to know they're actually fighting the swell.

🔧 Kevin23:40

Generator filter first. Then the bilge. Radio check at twenty-hundred if the aerial holds.

pour the last of the coffee into two tin mugs, set one beside her on the table

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the ankle still. The red line's stopped advancing but the heat in it hasn't dropped. Tomorrow's list is long and the boat's not coming if this barometer keeps holding. Need to get the generator fuel filter changed before dark and check the dinghy's bilge pump one more time.

🌿 Jenny23:42

The aerial will hold. I tightened the bolts myself yesterday.

Take the mug with both hands, letting the warmth seep into my palms while I stare at the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just a checklist, but the radio is the only thing between me and being completely erased.

🔧 Kevin23:42

Mm.

sit opposite her at the table, blow across my mug, watch the steam rise

💭 peek at the thought
She did. Watched her up the mast in the morning swell, one-handed with the wrench while the other clung to the shroud. Stubborn about it. The aerial's sound. It's the coax I don't trust — old cable, salt in the braid. But she doesn't need me second-guessing her work tonight.

🌿 Jenny23:44

Do you think they'll have the extra sheeting? The ridge is looking rough.

Take a slow sip of the bitter coffee, eyes tracking a bead of water running down the whitewashed wall.

💭 peek at the thought
It's too quiet when he isn't talking, just the sound of the rain hitting the stone.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:44

Harris had "roofing materials" on the manifest. Vague. Could be anything. We'll see what's aboard when — if — he makes the harbour.

sip coffee, set the mug down hard enough to ring on the table

💭 peek at the thought
The ridge beam's held three storms now on that lead flashing. Another layer of sheeting won't hurt but it's not what keeps me awake. The supply boat manifest had "roofing materials" listed — vague as ever. Could be tar paper, could be a pallet of slate. Captain Harris owes me a favour from '19 but favours don't float in a Force 8.

🌿 Jenny23:46

If it's not enough, I'll have to double the tarp.

Reach for the grandmother's seed tin, fingers the cold metal, checking for any new moisture inside.

💭 peek at the thought
Vague is a dangerous word when you're dealing with a leaking roof and a failing ankle.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:46

If it comes to that, we sister the beam first. Tarp's a bandage. Greenheart's in the shed, cut to length. Need three days dry to do it right.

reach over, brush a thumb along the tin's lid where her fingers rest

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead. Always. The tarp's got two more storms in it if the batten strips hold. But doubling it means weight on a ridge that's already sagging. Need to sister the beam proper when the weather breaks. Got the greenheart planks cut. Just need a window.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:48

We won't get three days dry if the wind shifts.

Pull the tin slightly away from his hand, holding it tighter against my chest.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always thinking about the structure, while I'm thinking about the life inside.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:48

Then we do it wet. Pre-drill the bolt holes tonight. Stage the plates. When the rain breaks for six hours, we drive them home.

pull my hand back, wrap both palms around my mug, stare into the dark liquid

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The barometer's steady at 982 but the swell direction's been wrong all week — west-northwest when it should be southwest. Means a low building somewhere south of us. Could sit on top of us for a week. The beam won't wait. Neither will the dock's north piling. Neither will her ankle.
