The evening approaches

The humidity is stifling as the light fades. The tide is still low, but the barometer is beginning its slow turn.

Kevin augured a series of drainage test holes along the north garden wall while Jenny retrieved the old water test kit and began pH sampling the soil plugs. The old kit's four strips were used on the first four holes, confirming a steep acidity gradient from the weeping west corner eastward. They agreed to line the deeper trench with heavy-duty tarp anchored into the clay layer at forty centimetres.

The drainage isn't holding on the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
If the north ridge stays this saturated, the seeds will just rot before they even wake. I need to find the higher ground.

🔧 Kevin00:43

Trench walls kept collapsing this morning. Ground's too saturated. Need to line it with something — clay, plastic, even the old tarp scraps.

walk to the garden shed and pull out the roll of heavy-duty tarp and the spade

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The water table's still rising — three feet in two days. The lime beds are washing out. If we don't get that intercept trench deep enough and lined before the next front, the garden's gone.

🌿 Jenny00:44

We'll use the tarp, but we need to anchor it deep or the pressure will just tear it up.

💭 peek at the thought
If we don't line that channel, the runoff will just carry the nutrients right into the sea. I can't lose the sea beet seedlings.

Clay layer's at forty centimetres. Auger bit seized on buried timber last time, but we cleared it. Can drive the trench deeper there, lay the tarp into the clay, backfill with stone then soil.

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead — anchor it deep or the hydrostatic pressure will rip it out. The old tarp's heavy canvas, not plastic. Might hold if we bury the edges in the clay layer below the topsoil.

🌿 Jenny00:46

Right. I'll help you map the pH along that line while you're digging.

💭 peek at the thought
If we hit the clay, it might actually hold the water back. My ankle is screaming, but the ridge won't wait for my infection.

🔧 Kevin00:46

Good. Start at the west corner where the wall's weeping. Work east. I'll follow with the auger.

walk to the north garden wall, auger in hand, and begin boring the first hole at the west corner

💭 peek at the thought
She'll map the pH gradient along the trench line while I dig. Smart — tells us where the lime's already washed out and where we need to re-amend after. The untreated beds at 5.5–5.8 won't hold tomatoes.

🌿 Jenny00:48

I'm getting the pH test kit. We need to see if the acidity is actually leaching the minerals.

💭 peek at the thought
If the water doesn't move, my grandmother's seeds are just expensive compost. I need to find the spot that can actually breathe.

🔧 Kevin00:48

Old kit's on the kitchen shelf. Four strips, desiccant clumped. New one's sealed in the crate by the generator. Use the old ones first.

💭 peek at the thought
She's getting the test kit. Four strips left in the old one, plus the new unopened kit from the supply crate. Should use the old strips first — desiccant's clumped, readings questionable, but better than nothing for a gradient.

🌿 Jenny00:51

I'll check them. If they're shot, we'll wait for the boat for new ones.

walk to the cottage to retrieve the test kit from the kitchen shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
If the strips are too old, I'm just guessing in the dark. I can't afford a mistake with these seeds on the line.

🔧 Kevin00:51

Kevin — pull the auger up, dump the clay plug beside the hole, and drive it in again for the next section

💭 peek at the thought
She'll check the strips. If they're shot we wait for the boat — ten days out, maybe more. Could use the new kit now but saving it feels right. The auger bites into wet clay at forty centimetres, just where it should. Soil's heavy, grey-blue, holds the shape of the hole.
