Midday Heat Deepens

The clouds thicken further, and the pressure drops a few more hPa as the scent of rain begins to rise from the parched garden.

Kevin secured the cottage roof tarp at the chimney flashing and south batten, then ran the Yanmar at load to verify the vibration fix. Jenny changed her ankle dressing, assessed the red line spread, and took antibiotics from the buried cache, while also testing soil pH near the garden wall.

Jenny — wipe sweat from eyes with the back of a hand and shove the spade into the heavy clay.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is going to break before I finish this trench. If it rains now, the whole wall will just turn to soup.

Trench won't hold in this muck. Walls'll slump before you get the pipe bedded.

Secure the last batten on the south roof slope, hammer the galvanized nails home, then climb down the ladder and walk over to where she's digging.

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing herself too hard on that ankle. The ground's too wet for a trench to hold — it'll just collapse back in. Should've told her to wait for the soil to drain, but she doesn't listen when she's set on something.

🌿 Jenny00:26

I know. I just need to get the line before the clouds pop.

Stop digging and lean on the shovel handle, staring at the collapsed edge of the trench.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, but if I don't do it now, the next storm will wash the garden right into the sea.

🔧 Kevin00:26

Come off it. The line's there. You're just digging mud into mud.

Walk over, set a hand on the spade shaft to stop her, and nod toward the cottage porch.

💭 peek at the thought
She knows. She's just stubborn. The clay's already slumping back into the cut — she's fighting the island and the island doesn't care. Her ankle's swollen above the brace. She shouldn't be on it at all.

🌿 Jenny00:28

fine. It's going to rain anyway.

Let go of the shovel and wipe the mud off my hands.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right. My ankle is throbbing and I'm fighting the island. I'm being stubborn.

🔧 Kevin00:28

Porch. Now. Broth's still warm.

Take the spade from her, lean it against the garden wall, and walk her back toward the cottage, one hand light on her elbow.

💭 peek at the thought
She gave in too easy. That's not like her. The fever's still in her, or the antibiotics haven't finished the job. Either way, she's not right.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:30

Okay.

Limp toward the porch, shifting my weight to my good leg.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is screaming. Every step is a hot needle. I'm so tired, and my stomach is growling.

🔧 Kevin00:31

Sit. I'll bring the mug.

Guide her onto the porch bench, go inside to the stove, pour the remaining limpet broth into the tin mug, and bring it out to her.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring it hard. The red line was at her knee yesterday — if it's tracking higher, the metronidazole didn't finish it. Four days until the boat. Maybe less if the front pushes them early.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:32

Thanks, Kevin.

Sit on the bench and wrap both hands around the warm mug, watching the clouds darken over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The mug is warm against my palms. I need to just sit. The sky is the color of a bruise.

🔧 Kevin00:32

Drink it slow. I'll check the dressing after.

Sit on the edge of the bench beside her, close enough that my shoulder brushes hers, and watch the ridge where the clouds are piling up black and low.

💭 peek at the thought
She's cold in this heat. That's not good. The broth's thin — mostly water and a few limpets — but it's salt and calories and she kept the last lot down. Small wins.
