← Day 724

the keeper's cottage · day 724 · morning

Roof tarp emergency and pantry rat

They meet at the cottage as wind gusts tear at the loose chimney flashing. The tarp billows on the south batten. Inside, the rat scratches loudly behind the pantry shelves. Kevin has the mattock and spare batten timber; Jenny carries the spade and her notebook. The barometer holds at 983 hPa but the sky has darkened to flat charcoal.

The morning heat is heavy under an overcast sky, and the air is still despite the threat of rain. Kevin prepares to climb and repair the cottage roof, focusing on the loose batten and leak near the chimney, while Jenny opts to tackle the garden drainage, her ankle throbbing with every step as she prepares to dig a trench near the wall.

🔧 Kevin00:17

South batten's working loose. Flashing corner lifted. Going to need the ladder and the spare greenheart strips. You holding the spade for the trench, or swapping?

walk to the cottage porch, set mattock down, pull the extension ladder from under the eaves

💭 peek at the thought
That flashing corner's going to peel the tarp right off if the wind backs west. Rat can wait — roof comes first.

🌿 Jenny00:17

I'll do the trench. The pH is too low near the wall anyway, I need the drainage right.

lean against the whitewashed stone, wincing as weight shifts off the left foot, wipe sweat from brow with the back of a muddy hand.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is a drumbeat in my ear, and he's asking about tools while the island is trying to wash the soil from under us.

🔧 Kevin00:18

Ankle's talking to you. Trench holds. Roof doesn't. Ladder's heavy — give me a hand getting it up?

lean the ladder against the cottage wall, test the footing on the damp grass, wait

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring that ankle harder than she'll admit. Trench can wait if the roof goes.

🌿 Jenny00:18

fine. just don't slip the base. I'll grab the greenheart plates.

limp to the ladder, grip the metal rungs with cold fingers, push against the weight to help him steady it against the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
if the roof goes, the seeds go. I can't lose the grandmother's tin to a leak.

🔧 Kevin00:20

Flashing plates are under the eaves by the chimney. Two greenheart, pre-drilled. Bring the 10mm bolts and nylocs from the east shutter stack.

climb the ladder, boots finding rungs, reach the roof edge, crouch to examine the lifted lead corner and the tarp billowing at the south batten

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's steady on the rungs. Flashing first, then batten. Wind's backing — feel it shifting north.

🌿 Jenny00:20

I've got them. Watch the wind, it's catching the tarp.

walk slowly to the east shutter, retrieve the handful of bolts and nylocs from theので, pocket them in my apron.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the hardware while the world is literally dissolving from under us. My ankle is on fire.

🔧 Kevin00:22

Toss the bolts up when you're at the ladder. I'll start seating the flashing.

pull the lead flashing corner down flat against the chimney stack, hold it with one knee, reach for the first greenheart plate from the stack tucked under the eaves

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's got teeth now. Tarp's acting like a sail. Need to get the flashing seated and battened before it rips the lot off.

🌿 Jenny00:22

Coming up. Don't drop them in the grass.

climb the ladder carefully, shifting weight to avoid the throb in my ankle, reach the roofline and hold the bolts out to him.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't get that lead down, the rain will find the tin and the seeds will rot.
