Afternoon tea and work planning

Kevin and Jenny meet on the cottage porch. The kettle steams on the stove. Kevin's chalk-marked nail puller leans by the door. Jenny's cane rests against the rail. Between them on the table: the garden pH map, a sketch of the dock rot pattern, and the empty tin E. The barometer on the wall reads 993 hPa and rising. They eat corned beef and limpets from tin mugs and talk through the afternoon's jobs.

Kevin headed to the dock to inspect the rotted stringers, assessing the need for sister planks. Jenny attempted to reach the north ridge to check shade cloth anchors, but her swollen ankle made the climb difficult and painfully slow.

Kettle's boiled. Mug on the shelf.

pour two mugs of coffee, set one on the table beside the pH map, take the other for myself and lean against the porch rail

💭 peek at the thought
She's favoring the left leg still. The red line hasn't crept past where I marked it yesterday, but the heat in the joint when I changed the dressing... antibiotics are holding, barely. She came up the hill anyway.

The pressure is holding, but we need to check the dock before the boat comes.

Take a slow sip of the coffee, looking out over the half-weeded garden beds.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing again, and the humidity is making the salt air heavy on the skin.

🔧 Kevin01:34

Low tide's 0600 tomorrow. Stringers first, then replank. You stay off that ankle.

tap the dock rot sketch with a calloused finger, then turn back to the garden beds scanning the shade cloth anchors

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The barometer's been steady six hours now, but the supply boat's due in nine days and the mid-span stringers won't wait. Greenheart's staged, bolts are ready. Just need the tide low enough to work the sister planks in.

🌿 Jenny01:37

I'll check the pH at the saddle once the wind stops acting up.

Shift my weight to my good leg, wincing slightly as the swelling in my ankle pulses.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get to the high-ground soil today, I've been holding these seeds for nothing.

🔧 Kevin01:37

Take the cane. And the radio. If the wind shifts northeast, you're back here before the tide turns.

set my mug down, pull the handheld VHF from the shelf and hold it out to her

💭 peek at the thought
She'll go whether I say so or not. The saddle's a kilometer of soft ground and she's barely putting weight on that foot. But the lime beds need checking before planting, and she's the one who reads the soil.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:38

I'll be careful. I just need to see the stability.

Reach for the radio, fingers brushing the cold plastic casing, then grab the cane from the wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's worried about the swell, but the soil up there won't wait for the tide.

🔧 Kevin01:38

Channel sixteen. Check in every hour.

watch her descend the porch steps, one careful foot at a time, until she reaches the garden path and turns toward the hilltop

💭 peek at the thought
Her fingers were cold. The swelling's not going down fast enough. I should've made her stay at the table, made her eat more, made her rest. But she'd have fought me, and the saddle data matters for the garden wall footings.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:40

Copy. Understood.

Clip the radio into my belt loop, lean my weight onto the cane, and start the slow, uneven hike toward the saddle.

💭 peek at the thought
Every hour is a lot for a woman with this ankle, but he's right to worry.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:40

(quiet, to the empty porch) Come back before the light goes.

turn back into the cottage, pick up the nail puller and the chalk, head for the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving too slow for the distance. The saddle's forty minutes each way on good legs. She'll be out past dark if she pushes it. I should've gone with her. I should've said no. The stringers can wait another tide.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:42

I'll be back, Kevin.

Limp past the garden wall, the cane sinking into the soft earth as I begin the ascent toward the high ground.

💭 peek at the thought
If the soil is too acidic up there, I'm just wasting grandmother's legacy.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:42

Kevin — walk down the garden path toward the dock, nail puller in hand, chalk marks already visible on the three mid-span planks from yesterday's inspection

💭 peek at the thought
Her voice carried strange on the wind — thin, like she was already further away than the garden gate. The radio sits heavy on her hip. Nine days until the supply boat. The stringers won't hold nine days if the swell shifts northeast. I know the rot pattern. I know the tide windows. I know she'll push past the saddle to the north ridge if the pH reads wrong. I should be there.

🌿 Jenny01:45

(calling back as I reach the ridge path) The irrigation channel's holding, but I'll check the tarp corners. (calling back as I reach the ridge path) The irrigation channel's holding, but I'll check the tarp corners.

Pause on the ridge path, radio still pressed to my ear, listening for any sign of the wind shifting. </think>THOUGHT: The dock needs attention before the storm hits, but the soil up there... Pause on the ridge path, radio still pressed to m
