Evening Debrief

You meet at the cottage as the sun begins to dip, the air growing heavy as the barometer continues its slow drop.

Kevin and Jenny took shelter in the kitchen as heavy rain hammered the cottage. Kevin poured hot water into tin mugs while water seeped across the floorboards from the northeast corner leak. They drank in silence, the barometer rising outside.

🌿 Jenny01:48

The rain is turning in fast. I'm not making it to the saddle.

lean heavily against the porch post, lifting my swollen ankle own a crate.

💭 peek at the thought
way ankle is throbbing, and the ridge is a lost cause for today.

🔧 Kevin01:48

Don't. Stay here. I'll check the saddle anchors myself once this front passes.

Walk up the porch steps, set a hand on her good shoulder to steady her, and guide her toward the kitchen door.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the bad ankle hard. The red line was tracking up her calf this morning — antibiotics or not, that leg needs rest and elevation, not a climb to the saddle in driving rain.

🌿 Jenny01:50

The soil is too saturated anyway, Kevin. It would just wash out.

sink into the kitchen chair, rubbing the heat radiating off my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
he's always trying to bridge the gap when I'm falling apart.

The trench can wait. The roof flashing can't. Water's tracking down the northeast wall behind the mortar — saw it dripping onto the floorboards by the radio shelf.

Pull the chair out from the table with my foot, sit opposite her, and reach for the kettle on the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the soil. The trench we dug yesterday was already slumping before dark. Another day of this rain and the whole north face could let go. But she's hurting bad and trying to make it sound like a decision instead of a necessity.

🌿 Jenny01:52

I should have moved the tin to the high shelf when it started.

wince as I shift my weight, watching the dark water bloom on the whitewashed stone.

💭 peek at the thought
if the radio gets wet, I'm truly cut off from the weekly reports.

🔧 Kevin01:52

It's a tin. It's survived worse. The seeds inside are dry — you sealed it proper.

Lift the kettle, pour hot water into the two tin mugs on the table, push one across to her without asking.

💭 peek at the thought
She's blaming herself for the leak. The tin — her seed tin, the one marked E — sits on the counter where she left it. Water's pooling around its rusted base. I should've moved it myself when I saw the stain spreading on the ceiling yesterday. But I was at the dock, chasing rot in stringers that won't hold till spring.

🌿 Jenny01:57

Hot feet, dry crown," don't they? Grandmother's note. "You always knew which parts mattered, didn't you?

take the mug, wrap my hands around the warmth, listen to the rain. </think>THOUGHT: the seeds are dry despite the tin's state, and Kevin knows this without me spelling it out. trace the rim of the mug with my thumb, feeling the heat seep in

💭 peek at the thought
the kettle steam rising, the way he never asks about the antibiotics anymore.

Your grandmother knew more about seeds than I'll ever know about engines.

Wrap my hands around my own mug, let the steam rise, and watch the water bloom on the floorboards near her feet.

💭 peek at the thought
She's quoting her grandmother at me like I should know the saying. Maybe I do — something about roots and crowns, keeping the important parts dry. She's warm now, the mug helping. The rain hammers the roof steady. The leak by the radio shelf drips slow into the bucket I set there. Generator's still running outside, coughing every third revolution. I should check the fuel line before dark. But she's sitting, finally still, and the antibiotics are working even if the leg looks angry.
