The Storm Deepens

The rain shows no sign of slowing, and the interior air of the cottage grows increasingly damp as the wind howls through the eaves.

Kevin and Jenny shared coffee at the cottage table while the overcast sky hung heavy. A seabird chick fell from the cliff ledges, landing hard near the cottage. They discussed the dropping pressure and the ongoing state of the cottage's leaking shutter.

Jenny — pull the blanket tighter around my shoulders and way at the flickering wick of the oil lamp.

💭 peek at the thought
If the soil keeps turning like this, the high-ground survey will be impossible until spring.

Kettle's still warm. Want another mug before the generator dies?

Wipe mud from my hands on my thighs, walk to the stove, lift the kettle lid to check water level.

💭 peek at the thought
Water's winning tonight. The trench isn't holding and she's watching the lamp instead of sleeping. Her ankle's been quiet too long — either the antibiotics finally caught up or the infection's gone deeper where I can't see it.

🌿 Jenny01:18

Please.

reach for the sketchbook on the table to keep my hands from shaking.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm too tired to even stand, but the cold is getting into my bones.

Kevin — pour hot water into two tin mugs, drop a spoonful of coffee into each, stir with the same spoon, set one on the table beside her sketchbook without touching her fingers.

💭 peek at the thought
Hands shaking. She's hiding it behind the sketchbook but I've seen that tremor before — 0300 two nights ago when the fever spiked. The antibiotics should've held by now. Unless they didn't.

🌿 Jenny01:20

Thanks.

wrap both hands around the warm mug to let the heat sink into my palms.

💭 peek at the thought
He remembers how I like it, even if I don't say it.

Your lines are straighter than mine.

Sit opposite her at the table, blow across my mug, watch the steam curl toward the damp beams.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not drawing. Just holding the mug like it's the only solid thing in the room. The sketchbook's open to the dock rot map — her pencil lines cleaner than mine, the rot line traced in careful arcs. She notices what I miss.

🌿 Jenny01:22

They're just sketches, Kevin.

trace the edge of a sea beet drawing with my thumb, looking at the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
My lines are just a way to make sense of the chaos outside.

They're records. The ridge won't look like that come morning.

Sip coffee, grimace at the bitterness, set the mug down hard enough to rattle the table.

💭 peek at the thought
She's deflecting. Always does when the tremor shows. The sea beet drawing — that's the north ridge transect, gland density gradients across elevation zones. She memorized the slope before the rain took it. Smart. The slope's gone now, washed or waiting to wash.
