Night watch and roof plan

Rain hammers the roof and the wind shifts west. Kevin sits at the table with the lead flashing and epoxy, mapping the repair by lantern light. Jenny's ankle rests elevated, the poultice renewed. The generator hums steady. A driftwood tangle has washed up on the beach, visible through the window when lightning flashes.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🔧 Kevin01:59

Generator's holding. Roof'll have to wait for a break in the wind.

pull the notebook from the shelf and sketch the northeast corner repair sequence by lantern light — strip mortar, bed lead, epoxy bead, tool smooth before it skins over

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's coming at the wrong angle for the flashing repair — west wind driving it under the eaves. Can't work the roof in this. Generator's steady though, that's something. Driftwood on the beach means the tide's pushing hard. Might be usable timber in that tangle if the storm doesn't take it back.

🌿 Jenny02:02

Just make sure the water doesn't reach the shelf.

Jenny leans back, wincing, and watches the dark water tracking down the whitewashed stone.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain on the roof. If that water gets to the radio again, I'm really in trouble.

🔧 Kevin02:02

Won't. Bucket's under the worst of it. I'll run a tarp strip from the eave to the porch rail as a chute — catch what the flashing misses.

grab the heavy canvas roll from the corner, cut a three-foot strip with the church key blade, and nail it along the eave outside the northeast corner with the remaining copper nails, angling it toward the porch rail

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the same track I am — water finding the radio shelf. Radio's the only line out. If that goes, we're blind.

🌿 Jenny02:04

Make sure the nails are deep or the weight of the water will tear it loose.

Jenny reaches for her sketchbook and begins sketching the silhouette of the driftwood tangle visible on the beach.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually doing something about the leak instead of just talking about the weather.

🔧 Kevin02:04

Driving them into the joints. Heads bent.

step onto the porch roof via the loft hatch, copper nails between teeth, hammer in belt loop; nail the canvas strip into the mortar joints along the eave, bending each head flat with the hammer's claw, working fast in the driving rain

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Copper's soft, the stone's wet, and a full canvas belly of water will pull them clean out. Need to drive them into mortar joints, not stone, and bend the heads flat.

🌿 Jenny02:06

Be careful, the stone is slick with moss.

Jenny stops own, her pencil hovering over the paper as she watches his shadow move against the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to catch a slip up there. The wind is picking up again.

🔧 Kevin02:06

Three points. Not falling today.

crouch low, test each foot placement before committing weight, finish the last two nails, then crawl back to the hatch and drop inside, wet and cold

💭 peek at the thought
Moss on the north-facing porch roof — she's seen it, I haven't. Good eyes. One slip and I'm in the garden with a broken something. Slow feet, three points of contact.

🌿 Jenny02:08

Jenny — jenny stands up slowly, clutching her swollen ankle, and moves toward the wood stove to Start a fire.

💭 peek at the thought
He's soaked to the bone. way's going to catch a chill before morning. continuedSAY: Get by the stove. You're shivering.
